Redmond retires from county scene

-

OULART-THE BALLAGH clubman David Redmond has announced his retirement from inter-county hurling.

One of Wexford’s longest-serving players, Redmond decided to call time on his inter-county career last week after making his Senior debut in the Walsh Cup of 2008.

In a short statement, he said: ‘I wish to confirm my retirement from the Wexford senior hurling team. It has been a huge honour to represent Wexford over the last decade.

‘I would like to thank everyone involved in Wexford hurling throughout my career, in particular the management teams, Wexford County Board and the fantastic Wexford supporters.

‘I will miss being involved with the players that have made this journey most memorable, and the close friends that I have made over the years, I greatly admire.

‘I would like to thank my club Oulart-The Ballagh for helping to mould me as a player. I really appreciate the support they have given and the standards they have set for me. I look forward to finishing out my career with such a proud club.

‘I especially want to thank my mother and father, my partner Mairéad, all my family and close friends for being so supportive and understanding over the years.

‘Finally, I would like to wish the current Wexford senior hurling squad the very best of luck in the future, the hard work being done will soon reap the rewards that is richly deserved.’

Born on September 19, 1987, Redmond’s league and championship career with the Wexford Senior hurling team lasted from 2008 to 2017.

Having first played at under-age level with Oulart-The Ballagh, he went on to develop into a top-class Senior player both for club and county. He made his debut on the inter-county scene at the age of 17 when he was selected on the Wexford Minor team.

He subsequently enjoyed an unsuccessful period with the Wexford Under-21 team, but his tenure with the Intermediate side yielded an All-Ireland medal in 2007.

It was in 2008 that he made his National League debut, and played his last game for Wexford in the championship quarter-final defeat to Waterford last year.

He has helped his club to eight county Senior hurling titles and their solitary Leinster title in 2015. He made a total of 33 championship appearances for his county, scoring 4-32 from his midfield/forward role.

His overall appearances amounted to 91, with a scoring total of 10-79.
