People are asked to avoid using phones
March 1978
As things continue to get back to normal following the recent snowstorms, people are being advised that because of further problems caused by the ongoing communications strike, difficulties still remain with telephone and telex services, and they are being asked a result to avoid making anything other than urgent calls.
In particular, people are being asked to avoid making calls from 10 a.m. to 12 noon each day, and again from 2.30 p.m. to 4.30 p.m. - a request which has caused consternation among elements of the business community, for whom telephone and telex communication is essential.
A statement issued by the Department of Posts and Telegraphs this week reads:
‘The Department of Posts and Telegraphs regrets that difficulties are still being experienced with telephone and telex services, as the number of working trunk circuits available is not adequate to carry normal traffic loads.
‘It is in everybody’s interest that the available circuits be used to the best advantage. Your help in the following ways would be appreciated:
‘Use the telephone and telex services only for urgent calls.
‘If you do not get through on your first attempt, wait a few minutes and try again. Do not call the operator to report a fault.
‘Keep your calls as short as possible.
‘Try to avoid using the services during the following hours: 10 a.m. – 12 noon. 2.30 p.m. – 4.30 p.m.
‘Your co-operation in these matters will be greatly appreciated.’
