NEW ROSS

The Captains’ drive-in was a fantastic day and a fine tribute to lady Captain, Maeve.

Over 80 played in the mixed competition and all enjoyed a splendid meal afterwards. A very large crowd witnessed the drive-in, and we had splendid sunshine for the event.

There was a great buzz around the course for the day and feedback from many who participated was very positive. It is hoped to use the positivity from the occasion by holding a number of mixed events during the year, and consideration will be given to staging these on Friday afternoons once the weather improves.

Thanks to all who organised the event and in particular bar and kitchen staff who looked after us so well. Thanks to our friends in Creacon Wellbeing Centre for their sponsorship

Results: 1, Jimmy Ryan (17) and Adeline Foxe (25), 69; 2, Willie Kielty (16) and Teresa Foley (15), 71.5 (countback); 3, Eamon Dungan (5) and Anne Curtis (34), 71.5 (countback); 4, Tommy Liston (7) and Anne Curtis (Adm.), 71.5 (countback); 5, Steve Travis (19) and Ellen Howlett (33), 72.

The Grippers cruised to victory with a five-point win in the winter league. Elizabeth Purcell (19), Liz Roberts (23), Agnes Whelan (30) and Margaret Fitzpatrick (36) finished with 282 points.

There was very little between second and third place with the The Pretty Putters - Ann Curtis (Adm., 21), Patricia Quinn (26), Anto Rogers (31) and Betty Kelly (36) - with 277 points.

They were followed by The Swingers - Jacqui Morgan (14), Bridget Murphy (25), Teenie Murphy (29) and Mary Rose Ryan (34) - with 275 points.

Our first presentation will be on Wednesday, March 21, at 8 p.m. This will cover all competitions, including the winter league since January 10. All prize-winners, representatives and club members are asked to attend in appreciation of our sponsors.

Our diary is sponsored by Emco Printers and will be available for collection in the office towards the end of next week.

The Captains’ drive-in was a great turn-out and our Captain, Maeve, definitely had a say in the weather. Tee-off was at 11 a.m. and afterwards a sit-down meal and chat was had by all.

As Maeve said: ‘Best wishes ladies for 2018 and here’s to the the little white ball flying up the fairway of life for us all.’

NEW ROSS SENIORS

After the torrential rains of Wednesday our Thursday outing looked doomed, but thanks to the T.L.C. (tender loving care) of the dedicated course staff throughout the year we got to go-ahead for our fixture.

The course lived up to its reputation of being one playable all the year round. True, the underfoot conditions were heavy but the recently tined greens were in good shape although a tad slow.

As usual, there was a battle royal among the teams in the champagne scramble format where a stiff south-easterly wind contrived to keep the scoring returns lower than normal. Allied to that it took players some time in getting the run of the greens where one needed a good firm putt to reach the hole.

We had a disqualification too with one team putting down wrong scores on the 13th hole.

In the end the 90 points scored by Denis Kirwan (14), Ray Shannon (14), Larry Shannon (20) and Jamesie Murphy (24) proved good enough to claim first prize.

A point behind in second spot were Dick Cuddihy (15), John Coleman (20), Willie Naddy (20) and John F. Roche (21) with 89 points. Third on 85 points came Tony Harford (13), Michael Gannon (18), Billy Redmond (21) and Martin Burke (26).

The timesheet for our outing to Gowran Park on Tuesday, March 27, is filling up rapidly. Anyone who wishes to be included in the teams should contact Jamesie Murphy (085-1846172) by text (OK for Gowran) with your name before Wednesday, March 22, in order to have the teams and tee-times available for viewing on next Thursday when we will collect all outstanding green fees (€20). Your kind co-operation in this matter would be greatly appreciated.

WEXFORD

Last week saw four competitions played before the weather intervened again and caused the postponement of the Captains’ drive-in and the Sunday competition. The drive-in will be re-scheduled to another date.

One of the other big disappointments of the week was Chairman Tom’s knee injury which postponed his return to competitive golf.

With the Chairman’s normal partner, coach Tommy, also on the injury list with a shoulder problem, no date has now been set for this talented duo’s return to competitive action.

On Friday, March 23, Clonard G.A.A. vlub are holding a table quiz in our clubhouse. All are welcome to participate.

Sunday, March 11, ten-hole singles: 1, John O’Brien, 24 points; 2, Pat Harnett, 23 points (back five); 3, Tom Foran, 23 points.

Tuesday, March 13, 14 holes open singles: 1, Ger Mulhall, 34 points; 2, Shane Jenkins, 31 points (back seven). The Over-70s’ prize went to Aiden Cogley with 30 points.

Friday’s competition was a three-person team event played over ten holes. With a fantastic score (handicapper please note) of 54 points, the winning team featured Seamus Sills, Brendan Long and Brian Judd.

The St. Patrick’s Day competition was a twelvehole singles. Making a welcome return to the winners’ enclosure after a long absence was Nicky Murphy with a score of 24 points.

Second place went to Gary Martin on 21 points, and in third place was Joe Moore with 20 points (back six).

Next weekend (weather permitting) sees the first big singles competition of the year, with the lady Captain Patricia Hanton’s prize to the men.

ROSSLARE

Having survived a few weeks of very severe weather, things returned to normality on Sunday week when the final round (scramble) of the winter league was played in Rosslare.

The winning team of Eilish Kavanagh, Tom Connon, John Hanrick, Kevin Collins, Mary O’Shaughnessy and Syl Farrell led after every round, and in the end their score of 193.5 left them with four points to spare over Robert Redmond, Charlie O’Gorman, Liam Bennett, Julie O’Brien and Jean Cullinane.

In third position on 188.5 were Bob Quilty, Rory Deane, Con Murphy, Irene Walker, Jim Hennessy and Ann Redmond, with Norrie Goff, Peter Cafferkey, Paud O’Brien, Gerry Haugh, Derek Wickham and Anna Kelly two points behind.

In fifth position on 185.5 were Joan Bowe, Liam McNamara, Philip Breen, Colman Doyle, John Garahy and Kathleen Cullimore.

Other results: singles, Paul Boggan, 34 points; fourball, Nick O’Connor and Donal O’Keeffe, 41 points; scramble, Joan Walsh, Gary Collins, Dixie Devereux, Michael Geraghty, Mairéad Esmonde and Kieran Morris, 45 points.

Many thanks to the two Jamies in the Pro Shop and the competitions committee for such an enjoyable tournament.

Fourball lamb, 16-hole: 1, Ray Roche (6), Tony Wright (13), 40 points; 2, Eamonn O’Rourke (13), Tom McGrath (16), 35 points; 3, Nigel Nolan (10), Glen Lanigan (14), 33 points.

As the Women in Golf proved so successful for the last two years, it was decided to introduce Golf for Men this year. It is open for participants of all ages and abilities.

Registration is on Wednesday, March 28, at 6.30 p.m. in the clubhouse, and the cost is €40.
