WELL-KNOWN Wexfordman Jack Sharkey was showered with cards and gifts as he celebrated his 100th birthday on Good Friday.

The former Bride Street Church sacristan who is still living independently, was the toast of his family and friends as he reached the centenary milestone.

Born in Park in 1918, Jack spent all his working life and became a Dispatch Clerk in Frank O’Connor’s bakery and shop until it closed down about a year before he was due to officially retire at the age of 65.

Shortly afterwards, he was appointed sacristan in Bride Street Church, a position he was to hold for 20 years until he retired in his mid-80’s.

The second youngest of his family, he was predeceased by his brothers and sisters and by his wife Marie who sadly died 10 years ago.

Jack has maintained his independence with the help and support of his daughters Monica Crofton who hosted a 100th birthday party at her home, Ann Griffin and Maura Sharkey and visits by a public health nurse.

‘He’s very healthy. he’s very independent and likes to be in his own house. He’s very happy,’ said Ann.

‘He reads the paper. He keeps up with the news and is very interested in everything. That’s what keep him going. He’s lucky.’

‘He said he won’t bother with the internet as he doesn’t think he could manage it’.

The grandfather and great-grandfather was the recipient of many good wishes from his extended family, friends and neighbours on the special occasion of his 100th birthday.

He was also delighted to receive a letter of congratulations and a cheque from President of Ireland Michael D Higgins.
