Boys in blue have it easy

- DEAN GOODISON JFC Group A in Ferns

SIX GOALS in the first 15 minutes ensured that Oylegate-Glenbrien got the easiest of possible starts in the Enniscorthy Farm Systems Junior football championship at the Ferns Centre of Excellence on Sunday.

At the end of the first quarter, with waves of attacking options cutting a dishevelled Davidstown-Courtnacuddy to ribbons, Oylegate-Glenbrien had built a commanding 6-2 to 0-1 lead in this Group A tie.

They did manage a seventh major before the break but mercifully eased off the gas in the second-half, choosing to take the easy point.

Probably the most impressive thing about the victors was the fact that they shared the goals around.

All seven green flags were raised by a different player, an indication that their running and support play was far superior to the level at which they are playing.

It was 2-0 to 0-1 as the game approached the ninth minute, following goals from Jack Reck and Seamus Casey.

They proceeded to add four more majors in a six-minute spell as Ciarán Hourihane, Eoghan Herlihy, Jamie Reck and Conor Doyle all got in on the act.

Arguably the last, Fiachra Hourihane’s effort in the 29th minute, was the pick of the majors, a peach of a strike from fully 20 metres out.

Trailing by 7-4 to 0-3 at the break, Davidstown-Courtnacuddy responded and defended a lot better in the second-half.

Oylegate-Glenbrien popped over the points their play deserved, with full-back Bryan McCormack even getting his name on the scoresheet.

Davidstown-Courtnacuddy did plug away and got a consolation goal from Vinny O’Brien with the last kick of the game, but it’s hardly a day they will want to remember.
