ROSSLARE LADIES

The Minor Cup team played Waterford Castle in New Ross on Saturday. Following a showery start, the weather improved for the afternoon with welcome bursts of sunshine.

However, the course was very wet, and lifting and placing were in operation, including the sand bunkers being out of play.

Despite a very promising start and a great contest, Rosslare lost to Waterford Castle. Thank you to the team members, their caddies, supporters and especially the team managers, Catherine Howard and Liz Murphy.

Thank you also to our club professional, Jamie O’Sullivan, for his coaching. A delicious meal was enjoyed after the match and all got home in time to watch The Masters. We wish Waterford Castle the best of luck in their next round.

Saturday, March 31, Scotch foursomes: 1, Norrie Goff (16/9.6) and Bernadette Cuddihy (23/9.2), 38 points; 2, Carmel Quinlivan (19/11.9) and Patricia Kinsella (26/10.9), 37 points.

ENNISCORTHY LADIES

The ladies’ competition for last week was played on Thursday as the course was closed due to heavy rain on Tuesday.

This was the annual Breast Cancer competition, and the ladies turned out in their pink attire to support this worthy cause. It was a scramble competition.

Results: 1, Laura Dempsey (6), Margaret Mooney (9), Mary Breen (24), 47.1; 2, Helen Cosgrave (10), Marie Dunphy (17), Chris Yates (35), 49.8; 3, Teresa Bailey (18), Anne Nolan (19), Ann Banville (14), 51.9.

Next week’s competition is sponsored by Burke O’Leary’s and is a singles stableford.

Our first ladies’ team out was the Minor Cup team. They played Wicklow in Woodenbridge on Sunday. They came up against a strong Wicklow team and unfortunately were beaten.

The Challenge Cup team will play Mount Juliet in Bunclody on April 15. We wish the team, manager and caddies the best of luck.

BALLYMONEY

Due to the very wet weather, there was no Wednesday nine-hole competition and the course was closed Friday and Saturday.

Thankfully, Sunday saw better weather and a good turn-out for a singles stableford competition.

The winner was Pat Larkin (18) with an outstanding 45 points. Robbie Kehoe (12) was second with 42 points, with Troy Kenny (18) third with 41 points.

Best of luck to Anthony Fortune and his All-Ireland fourball matchplay team. Ballymoney are home to Druids Glen next Saturday in the second round.

COURTOWN

Unfortunately, the course fell foul of the terrible weather conditions again during the past week.

This time was worse than the previous weeks when we were unable to open the course on any day between Monday and last Sunday, and at that we were only able to open at twelve noon.

Therefore, there have been no competitions to report on for the last week. We did, however, have two of our teams out on Sunday, and we are pleased to report that both had winning starts to their campaigns.

Our Barton Cup team had a win over Bunclody with three matches won at home, one won away and one called in.

Our Irish mixed foursomes also had a good start while playing St. Helen’s Bay with three home wins and one away win.

Let us all hope now that the weather has started to turn and that we can look forward to some uninterrupted golf for the rest of the season.

Courtown Golf Club said goodbye to our P.G.A. professional, John Coone. After a long career with the club, we take this opportunity to wish him well in his future endeavours.

The position for a new club professional has been advertised. We have had a good response and we expect that an appointment will be made very soon.

NEW ROSS SENIORS

With the club three-person scramble on last Thursday, we had no outing, but the Seniors group gave strong support to the club competition.

We resume as normal next Thursday, April 12, with a champagne scramble - a format much more favoured by our members.

Also on Thursday, we will collect the names and green fees for our next away outing to Bunclody Golf and Fishing Club on Tuesday, April 24. The all-in fee including a contribution towards extra prizes is €25.

We would appreciate if all those who intend travelling have their names in that day in order for the formulation of teams, and they will be announced on the following Thursday (April 19).

NEW ROSS

Well done to all who played in our Easter classic which was unfortunately affected by bad weather.

Results: 1, Liz Bennett and Adeline Foxe, 46 points (last six); 2, Tony Wallace and Richard O’Grady, 46 points; 3, Tom O’Connor and Michael Lee, 44 points.

Thank you to Jack Murphy and Murtech Engineering who sponsored the event. Jack has been a great supporter of the club over the years and is a past President.

Tuesday fourball: 1, Martin Carroll and Art Ward, 27 points; 2, Declan Clarke and Noel Devine, 26 points (last six); 3, Ger Ronan and Pat McGrath, 26 points.

Presentations for both will be held after the Tuesday fourball on April 10.

The closing date for the men’s foursomes matchplay is Tuesday, April 10. Entry per pair is €15 and should be placed in the men’s competition box.

‘Split The Pot’ was won by Ned Conway who collected €120. The next draw is on Tuesday, April 10.

There was bad news for our All-Ireland fourball team members who were narrowly beaten by Borris on a score of 3/2.

New Ross unfortunately lost two of their home matches. Thanks to the players and to team managers Peter Goggin and J.J. Hoyne.

Michael Ryan narrowly failed to make it to the last 16 in the West Of Ireland championship at Rosses Point. He was beaten 2/1 for a place in the last 16 and it was a very creditable performance on a links course.

NEW ROSS LADIES

I think Mother Nature will have to get back on her meds and start thinking warm happy thoughts... therevery little improvement in our weather again recently, and to top it off it was a stroke competition!

Bunkers were back in play but there is still placing everywhere. It was sponsored by Brandon Cleaning (Michael P. Cullen).

Results: 1, Marguerite Sutton (22), 74 (last nine); 2, Mary Shannon (17), 74; 3, Adeline Foxe (25), 75; nearest the pin on the ninth, Anne Curtis (Adm.); gross, Liz Bennett, 90.

Remember, an ongoing nine-hole competition is an option for everyone to keep an edge on your game! Play as often as you like for €3.

The next presentation will take place on April 11 at 8.30 p.m. for the winners of the Brandon Cleaning, Paul Rogers Solicitor and Blossoms Boutique competitions, and it will be followed by a fun fashion show where our lady members will be displaying the stunning and stylish outfits and shoes from Blossoms Boutique.

It is guaranteed to be a really fun night. Please bring your friends, all are welcome. We would ask all prize winners, representatives and club members to attend in appreciation of our sponsors.

Ladies, we are still urgently seeking volunteers to help out with the Junior section. It would help a lot if people would offer a little of their spare time please.

If available to help, can you please give your name to Mary Kavanagh, Patricia Quinn, Marguerite Sutton or Martin Carroll. Thank you.
