Rosslare plans first drive-in duty free
April 1992
A whole new concept in duty-free shopping is on the horizon in Rosslare Harbour, where Irish Rail is planning to oepn a drive-in shopping complex selling tax-empted goods.
When completed, the drive-in duty free mall will be the first facility of its kind in an Irish port. Holyhead in Wales already has a simlar shopping area.
Irish Rail has applied to the Revenue Commissioners and the Customs & Excise Authorities for approval, and is hopeful of a favourable response.
Investigations into security arrangements around the proposed complex are current taking place, with Irish Rail representatives planning to travel to England to view perimeter fencing and other measures there.
The drive-in facility will incorporate a number of shops, selling alcohol, cigarettes, cameras, perfumes, and other goods.
The development is being carried out by Irish Rail in conjunction with Sealink, which is launching a new speedy ferry service called the Sealynx in mid-June.
Passengers travelling on the Sealynx vessel, which will have a very limited duty free capacity, will drive through the duty free, stocking up on their purchases there before proceeding to board the ferry.
It is expected that the new duty free area will open shortly after the introduction of the fast ferry service.
