Kyle Cross work will mean up to 12 weeks of N11 delays
MOTORISTS using the N11 can expect traffic delays at Kyle Cross, north of Ferrycarrig, for the next ten to 12 weeks as roadworks take place to improve and narrow the road and junction.
A stop-go system will be in place for the duration of the works and the council will be monitoring the traffic management system through the use of technology like drones, which will give a clearer picture as to when and where there may be issues.
Approximately 13,000 cars use the road every day.
Wexford County Council Communications Manager David Minogue explained that, as it stands, traffic travelling south to Wexford have a left-turn lane for Crossabeg, a straight road for continuing traffic, and a right-turn lane bringing them to Kyle. For traffic coming from the opposite direction, the road layout is the same.
‘We are narrowing the whole junction and doing away with the slip lanes. What that will do is slow down traffic on what is a fast piece of road and make it easier for motorists coming from Kyle and Crossabeg to get across the road.’
In addition to those works, he pointed out that the quality of the road had deteriorated in the location and, because of its high usage, it was very important that improvement works were carried out.
‘The works will take ten to 12 weeks. We will have a stop-go traffic light system in place. There will, inevitably, be delays but we’re appealing for patience from the public. This is a significant junction and, unfortunately, there is no easy option when it comes to managing traffic on it.’
He added that, given the volume of traffic on the road, and the condition of other routes around the area, detouring was not considered a suitable solution in this case.
The project is being fully funded by Transport Infrastructure Ireland, as part of its national funding.
