Wheely good fundraiser raises €1,100 for cancer

- By ESTHER HAYDEN

THERE was a fantastic atmosphere in Joyces of Wexford recently at a fundraiser in aid of the Irish Cancer Society.

The fundraiser which was organised by Joyces Expert included a coffee morning, cycle-a-thon as well as lots of raffles.

Tables in the store were laden with cakes, buns, biscuits and lots of tasty treats which were quickly snapped up by peckish shoppers. The cycle-a-ton saw local personalities Alan Corcoran, George Lawlor, Mark Fanning, Kate Kelly and Lee Chin as well as Myles Doyle and Kenny Hearne from Shelmaliers GAA take to the saddle to raise funds for the Irish Cancer Society.

There were plenty of giveaways on the day including a Dyson V6 Cordless Vacuum, a Philips Air Fryer, Morphy Richards Vacuum, DeLonghi Coffee Machine, George Foreman Grill and lots more.

For the kids there was plenty of entertainment including a facepainter and tasty treats to keep them occupied.

Joyces organised the fundraiser with their colleague Con Crean who is cycling 600km from The Lewes Arms in Lewes, England to Cleere’s in Kilkenny, arriving back just in time for the Kilkenny Roots Festival in May. Con’s epic trip is in memory of his good friend Willie Meighan of Rollercoaster Records who unfortunately lost his battle with cancer last November.

Deirdre Keogh of DK Marketing said the event had been a massive success.

‘We raised a total of €1,100 on the day and overall Con is hoping to raise €3,000. Con has worked in Joyces for the past 12 years and people were keen to help support this worthy cause. He’s nearly at his target now too which is great and there’s still a donation box instore.’
