MERCY PUPILS LEARN ALL THE RIGHT MOVES

-

FIFTH AND Sixth class pupils at the Mercy School on John’s Road got the chance to perfect their steps as part of their P.E. curriculum when local dance teacher Vilma Baikiene took them for a six-week programme in ballroom dance.

Vilma, who is originally from Lithuania, is a qualified ballroom and Latin teacher who has acted as an adjudicator in international competition. Her programme was taken on board by the school and became part of their P.E. class each week. Vilma said both the boys and girls in the classes enjoyed the initiative which aims to promote dance to kids.

Vilma, who is also running a kids’ dance camp in July in the school, said that ballroom dance was a great way to prevent weight gain, promote healthy movement and social skills, increase memory, improve flexibility and balance, and, most of all, it was fun!

The kids greatly enjoyed getting the opportunity to learn the art of ballroom dance and Vilma hopes that other schools will try their hand at it in the future.
