Action packed road challenge and car show fit for a king

- BY DAVID LOOBY

THE Wexford Car Classic Club annual Spring Challenge event takes place in County Wexford on Sunday, April 29.

Since 2010 the club have been running a classic car show on the quays of New Ross on weekends in April. The format is for a car show to take place on Saturday, April 28 and the 100 mile charity drive challenge on the Sunday.

Hundreds of cars enter the event every year. Event organiser Ger Kielthy said: ‘This year we have decided to change the format by moving the classic car show to Wexford quays on Saturday, April 28, and on Sunday, April 29, starting our annual 100 mile challenge, charity drive from Wexford quay’s, taking in some very scenic roads as we head north on the coast road R742 for lunch halt and a two hour car show at the Amber Springs Hotel.’

Drivers will then travel south on some testing driving roads towards Enniscorthy and the event will finish at Corcoran’s bar in New Ross.

Ireland’s rally legend Rosemary Smith will be driving a very special Opel Monza in the dealer Opel team Ireland livery driven on the famous Circuit of Ireland International rally in the 1980s.

Wexford quays will be filled with all car models from Austins to Mercedes and to Hondas to Porsches.

‘All vehicles are welcome,’ Ger said.

‘Once again we have our close and good friends from Wales making a very welcome visit to Wexford with 50 cars to the quays as they take part in their Celtic charity classic tour.’

Saturday will see lots of river activities as the club have joined forces with the RNLI Wexford Lifeboat station, while other beneficiaries include Wexford Marine Watch and Wexford Women’s Refuge.

The classic car show will run from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. On Sunday, April 29, the Spring Challenge charity drive group will gather from 10 a.m. with the first car away at 11.30 a.m., arriving at the Amber Springs Hotel for 1 p.m. (with a car show), travelling via Curracloe, Blackwater, Kilmuckridge, Ballygarrett, Riverchapel and Gorey, leaving the Amber Springs Hotel at 3 p.m. for Enniscorthy at 4 p.m. via Ballycanew, Harrow, Boleyvogue, Ballyedmond and Ballaghkeen, before finishing at Corcoran’s New Ross at 4.30 p.m. via Clonroche.
