Polish coal ships return to New Ross
April 1982
Shipments of Polish coal to New Ross have resumed. Significantly reduced up to the middle of last year, they ceased altogether in mid ‘81 because of the political situation in Poland.
Poland had been the major supplier to Ireland for the past twenty years, btu since the non-availability of supply from Poland arose, the tonnage imported has been from the US, supplemented by supplies from the UK.
Polish coal has been very suitable for and very popular with Irish householders, and its availability is welcome. The first cargo of 3,500 tons for Stafford Fuel Ltd., New Ross, came from Gdansk, the second on board the MV Pearl was also from Gdansk, while the third, on the MV Ciechanow, is currently en route from the same port.
Staffords hope to have regular imports of coal from Poland from now on.
