HERMITAGE GREEN TO ROCK THE DUN MHUIRE

- (By Brendan Keane) COMPILED BY MARIA PEPPER

IRISH ROCKERS Hermitage Green are on their way to Wexford and will be appearing in the Dun Mhuire Theatre, on Saturday, May 5, where they will be joined by one of the fastest rising stars of the Wexford and Irish music scenes, Niall Cash.

The gig, which will come in the wake of an international tour that saw the band take in the UK, the Middle East, Australia and America, will form a welcome return to the town for the band and is sure to be a sell out.

Mixing a myriad of influences ranging from folk to blues the band came about as a result of a spontaneous jam session between friends and in the interim the overall sound has evolved with the instrumentation now including bodhrán, djembe, rhythm guitar and banjo.

The Dun Mhuire gig, which is being promoted by Lantern Presents, will see the act showcase material from its new E.P., ‘Gold & Rust’. The set will also include fan favourites such as ‘Save Your Soul’, ‘Jenny’, and ‘Not Your Lover’.

Band member, Darragh Griffin, said the E.P.s title is reflective of what it’s like being in a contemporary rock band.

‘It represents the many contrasts of being in a band,’ he said.

‘The ups-and-downs, highs-and-lows, whatever you want to call it,’ he added.

While the group has enjoyed a noteworthy level of success to-date the members are keeping their feet firmly on the ground and have experienced everything from ‘walking out of a sold out Olympia Theatre in Dublin, to playing to seven people in a town somewhere in the U.S.’.

Dan Murphy said the E.P. represents the fact that band members love and hate each other in equal measure: ‘From telling your band mates you love them and would do anything for them, to trying to kill your band mates because they piss you off sometimes. ‘Gold & Rust’ is the dichotomy between the struggle and the absolute privilege of doing what you love for a living.’

The special guest on the night will be Wexford songwriter, Niall Cash, who was nominated for ‘Best Solo Male Act’ in the Pure M Awards.

He has appeared at some of the top venues in the country including the Button Factory, Whelan’s, the Workman’s Club, the Ruby Sessions and Wexford Spiegeltent. Though a singer-songwriter at heart he got a full band around him to record his debut E.P., ‘Frames Have Cracked’, which hit the No. 1 spot in the Irish singer-songwriter charts on iTunes.

There will be a full bar open in the Dun Mhuire for the bank holiday weekend and over-14s, accompanied by an adult, will be permitted in the seated areas only.

Tickets for the show, priced €23, are now on sale from the Dun Mhuire Theatre box-office, Bugler Doyle’s off-licence and online through www.lantern.ie.
