Councillors commend local achievements
TRIBUTE WAS paid to a number of groups for their various achievements over the course of the previous month at the April meeting of Wexford Borough District Council.
Mayor, Cllr Jim Moore opened the proceedings by commending all those involved with the Redmond 100 celebrations, which were attended by Uachtarán na hÉireann Michael D Higgins.
Cllr Frank Staples echoed these sentiments, saying it was great welcome the President for the occasion.
Councillors George Lawlor and Davy Hynes also congratulated those involved in the event, as did Cllr Ger Carthy, albeit while lamenting the low turnout of councillors at the event, suggesting that a greater effort was needed when a Head of State was in attendance. He was promptly told, by Cllr Tom Forde, that life sometimes got in the way of such plans, pointing out that he had a prior commitment at a community event, as well as a friend who had suffered the bereavement of his father.
Cllr Staples also congratulated Ballycogley Players for reaching the All Ireland Confined Drama Finals, while Cllr Lawlor paid tribute to North End who had reached the final of the FAI Junior Cup which, he said, was the biggest soccer cup in Europe. It was, he pointed out, the first time a Wexford town team had done this and he asked that the council would honour them appropriately for their achievement.
Cllr Lawlor also expressed congratulations to Leon Reid, a Menapians athlete who had won a bronze medal in the 200m sprint at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games, competing for Northern Ireland. He remarked that it was a very special occasion, to win an international medal.
Cllr Mick Roche congratulated the U14 Wexford Wanderers team who had won a Leinster title the previous weekend - a team his own son was a member of.
