There was a big entry of 125 for the P.G. Walsh Cup, with two fantastic scores from the two Seáns. The winner will have free entry to all competitio­ns for the 2018-’19 year, starting from next November.

We are now taking entries for the singles matchplay. The entry fee is €7 and it should be placed in an envelope with name and contact detail and left in the men’s competitio­n box.

All the matchplays were very kindly sponsored by a member who wished to remain anonymous.

‘Split The Pot’ was won by Mark Cullen who collected €92. The next draw will take place on Tuesday, May 8.

I would like to bring to your attention again our lady Captain Maeve’s charity day in aid of the National Breast Cancer Research Institute which will be held on Wednesday, May 30.

It is an open fourball for men and women. Each competitio­n runs separately on the day.

The country’s 20 best nett and six best gross women’s scores will qualify for the national finals in Glasson in September. Due to the sad passing of Maeve and her popularity, visitors will be coming and the timesheet will be open to the men also.

Please book your time slot as soon as possible. The entry fee is €10 minimum per person.

ROSSLARE

The Rosslare mixed foursomes team made its exit from the inter-club competitio­n, going down in a close encounter to Courtown.

The team was: Angela Murphy and Paul Boggan, Norrie and Pat Goff, Niamh Byrne and Boyd Scott, Valerie Doyle and Keith Deacon, and Máire Farrell and Jim Cullimore.

On Sunday week, KD Garages and Scania sponsored the fourball and there was some great scoring.

Colm Callery (7) and Paul Cummings (15) won with 46 points, one point ahead of Stan Jackson (13) and Colman Doyle (19).

Geoff Coman (10) and Tim Cummings (15) were third on 44 points, with Pádraig Dempsey (12) and Eugene Daly (26) one point further back in fourth position.

Saturday, April 28, mixed team of four: 1, Mark Fitzpatric­k (8), Stan Jackson (13), Colman Doyle (19), Mairéad Esmonde (24), 91 points; 2, Doreen McGovern (12), Catherine Howard (16), Jim Hennessy (18), Maura Foran (18), 88 points.

Simon Black (3, Bunclody) won the open singles on Wednesday with 37 points. He had a birdie at the 17th in a two over par round of 74.

Second on 36 points was Liam Stones (7, Blainroe), with Philip Quigley (18) third on 35 points.

Congratula­tions to Dan Cash who had a hole-in-one at the 14th on Thursday.

The Captain, Jim Cullimore, won the Wednesday Captain prize in Rosses Point last week. Well done, Captain.

ROSSLARE LADIES

Congratula­tions to managers Doreen and Catherine, and the Challenge team of Carmel, Anna, Deirdre, Jean, Eilis, substitute Mary and their caddies and supporters, on defeating Athy in Borris on April 29.

What a great match it was, with huge excitement as two matches went up the 19th with Rosslare winning both. Well done ladies, commiserat­ions to Athy, and the best of luck to Rosslare in the next round.

Hard luck to managers Miriam and Irene, and the Junior foursomes team members who were defeated by Wexford in Enniscorth­y on April 29.

Thanks to all who participat­ed and better luck next year. We wish Wexford good luck in the next round.

The ‘Ladies Into Golf’ group are in full swing on the Burrow course on Tuesdays at 6 p.m. for the month of May.

However, due to the heavy rain on May 1, we retreated to the driving range for a fantastic hour of practice. A huge thank you to the generous lady members who volunteere­d their time to assist.

This was our first presentati­on evening of the season with a special ‘May’ dinner menu from our caterers. It was a very well-supported evening with some of the ‘Ladies Into Golf’ attending, and the food and wine were delicious.

The French Connection boutique presented a wonderful summer fashion show which we all enjoyed. The models were beautiful, as were the clothes! Thank you to Noreen Fox of the French Connection and her team.

All winners of competitio­ns held from April 10 to May 1 inclusive were presented with their prizes after the fashion show.

Congratula­tions to both the Minor Cup team and Junior Foursomes team on great wins last weekend in their inter-club matches, with heart-stopping putts aplenty! Great golf was played by all.

The closing date for entries is May 17. There will be separate competitio­ns for handicaps 0-36 and 37 plus.

The Tuesday evening mixed competitio­n is going from strength to strength, so check out the timesheet, and don’t forget the sheet is also available for the club mixed foursomes competitio­n so find your partner, pay your fee and enter.

The Wednesday fourball was won by Tommy Hynes (13) and Kenny Walsh (12) with 35 points. John French (11) and John O’Neill (17) were second with 34 points on the back seven.

The team event on Friday was won by Seán Farrell (11), Nigel Morrissey (12) and Martin Kavanagh (18) with 76 points from Larry O’Neill (8), Mick Fortune (15) and Seán Hurley (18) with 70 points.

Last week’s competitio­n was sponsored by John Codd Decorators. The winner was Mick Whelan (19) with 40 points. Paul Gaddren (13) took second, for the second week in a row, from Dennis Duggan (15) on the back three with 39 points.

Ollie Dempsey Jnr. took fourth place also with 39 points, losing out on the back nine.

Joe Cashe (7) was fourth with 38 points (back six), Peter Byrne won the gross with 34 points, while Tommy Hynes (13) won the vets. with 35 points on the back six.

The draw for the men’s super six competitio­n also took place (see details of dates etc. on the club noticeboar­d and on the club website.

Well done to ‘The Painter’ who had a very successful visit to Sligo recently, with three pars over 37 holes!

Congratula­tions to Rosari McDonald who won €50 in the Joker draw.

There was great excitement at the launch of the club draw and all members are encouraged to support.

Wednesday nine-hole competitio­n (back nine), mixed: 1, Richard McDonald (10), 19 points; 2, Anthony G. Doyle (22), 18 points; 3, Gary O’Grady (22), 15 points.

The weekend singles stableford (mixed), played in good weather on April 28-29, saw some good scores returned.

Ken Layton (17) won with 41 points, holding off Troy Kenny (18) on countback. Kevin Byrne (19) was third with 39 points.

Wednesday nine-hole (mixed, back nine): 1, Richard McDonald (10), 20 points; 2, Gary O’Grady (24), 18 points; 3, Peter Smith, 16 points.

The weekend stableford singles (mixed) was played in glorious weather with the course in fine condition.

Gary O’Grady (24) once again played well and won with 42 points.

Troy Kenny (18) also continued his recent good form and was second with 39 points, holding off Kevin Keenan (21) and Sammy Walker (8) on countback. The fine weather saw a very good turn-out.
