Wexford cheers for newly elected UK councillor

- By MARIA PEPPER

There was widespread celebration in Wexford when Conservative Party candidate Ciaran White was elected to Havering Council in London in the recent UK local elections.

Ciaran (30), an Events and Community Fundraiser with the mental health charity Havering Minds, is a son of Geraldine White (nee Cullen), a native of Wexford town and a grandson of the late Aidan and Lillian Cullen of St. Aidan’s Crescent.

A frequent visitor to Wexford, the newly-elected councillor grew up in Romford, England where his mother emigrated as a young woman and met and married Londoner Stephen White. He has a brother Conor and sister Katherine.

Ciaran is a nephew of Philip and John Cullen and Ina Lett and Margaret Cullen who are understandably proud of his political success.

Politics runs in the family as his granddad Aidan was an active member of Fianna Fail for many years while his aunt Ina was involved in Fianna Fail and later the Progressive Democrats.

He is a cousin of the wellknown Wexford solicitor, Fianna Fail councillor and former Senator Lisa McDonald. Ciaran was one of three Conservative councillors elected to Havering Council, representing the Hylands Ward which had one of the highest turnouts in the East London borough. The former Sainsbury’s Assistant Manager graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Business Management from the University of Essex and an Events Management Diploma from Ashdown Academy after obtaining A Levels in ICT, Business Studies and Design at The Campion School in Hornchurch where he was a sixth form prefect. Among his key interests are civil rights, social action, health, the environment and animal welfare.
