Outside the box thinking needed to keep our beaches litter free

-

THE replacement of full size bins with half size bins at our beaches has lead to an increase in dumping.

Cllr George Lawlor and Cllr Frank Staples raised the matter, saying dumping has gotten out of control at beaches including Curracloe. Cllr Lawlor said the bins were changed to stop people from dumping domestic rubbish in them but the effect has been to lead people to leave the bags of rubbish beside the bin, encouraging other people to dump there also. Offering the example of Enniscrone Beach where litter pickers are made available for walkers, he said the council needs to think outside the box in its war against litter.

Cllr Staples said the council would be better off having no bins at our beaches than half bins as ‘people throw rubbish where they see people have thrown rubbish.’

He said he knows of people being fined €700 and being made to pay €1,000 in legal fees in other counties, asking if this is happening in

County Wex- ford’s courts. Director of Services John Carley said he would be disappointed that the environment section wasn’t on top of it, adding that he would get staff to investigate.
