£55,000 for cottage with no facilities
May 1995
Predictions that the propery market may be about to ‘take off ’ were given added weight last week. A two-bedroom cottage at Ferrycarrig, with no running water, no bathroom, no electricity and no sewage system sold for an amazing £55,000 at auction on Friday.
‘Hillview Cottage’, set on a half-acre site, attracted six bidders. It was sold to a Dublin woman who bought it in trust for her sister, who currently lives in Germany and who plans to use it as a retirement home.
Bidding for the property opened at £20,000 and moved quickly to £40,000, when it was placed on the market.
Describing the cottage as ‘a piece of heaven’, auctioneer John Keane said that the high price was achieved because it is so rare to get a residential property in Ferrycarrig.
This scarcity of residential properties is compounded by the difficulty involved in securing planning permission for new developments.
He added that there was a considerable amount of interest in the cottage even though it was without services, and people were prepared to take it at is was, just to be in this beautiful area of the county.
The cottage boasts a scenic and panoramic view of Ferrycarrig and the Slaney estuary.
Accommodation comprises of an entrance porch, a living room, kitchen/diner, and two bedrooms. There are gardens to the front and rear.
