Sea-themed concert goes down a storm

- By BRENDAN KEANE

THE CHURCH in Carrig-on-Bannow was packed to capacity recently for a major stage production organised by the Little Sea Musical Society.

The Rhythm of the Sea concert featured around 100 performers and included children and adults on stage.

Speaking to this newspaper about the event, organiser Angela Mahon said it was a great success but was also the result of months of hard work and preparation.

‘We based the theme around the fact that most of the people involved with the society are familiar with the area known locally as the Little Sea and so we tried to encompass that in the theme,’ she said.

Ms Mahon wrote an original song especially for the occasion, ‘Rhythm of the Little Sea’, which received its premiere on the night. She performed it while accompanying herself on piano and she was also backed on stage by the KFM Concert Orchestra.

The concert featured some very well known numbers from the world of classical music and also from music theatre including ‘Rhythm of Life’ from Sweet Charity and also the ‘Hallelujah Chorus’ from Handel’s, ‘Messiah’.

Another highlight of the concert was a solo performance by Domini Codd of ‘I Dreamt I Dwelt in Marble Halls’.

The event also featured members of the KFM Young Voices choir which is composed of Third Class pupils from local primary schools. The KFM SWOPS Orchestra (South Wexford Orchestra for Primary Schools) also performed a programme of original compositions throughout the event.

Ms Mahon said the ethos of her own Kiltra School of Music and the Little Sea Musical Society is to give local children the opportunity to sing and perform in groups and, in the process of that, to learn to read music as a language.

The show, which went down a storm with the audience, served as a fundraising event for the expansion of the music society and for additional facilities at the Kiltra School of Music.
