Footballers at home to Waterford
WEXFORD HAVE been handed a golden chance to revive their championship campaign with a home draw against neighbours Waterford in the All-Ireland Senior football qualifiers.
Having lost their opening round game to Laois in dramatic circumstances after extra-time, despite holding a ten-point interval lead, Paul McLoughlin will look on this draw as a real opportunity to prolong their season.
However, he will not be helped by the expected absence of injured trio Daithí Waters, Jim Rossiter and Paul Curtis, all of whom received injuries during the Laois outing.
Team captain Waters carried a knee injury into that game, which he aggravated, while he also sustained a fractured eye socket during the course of the match.
Rossiter was forced to retire during the opening half with a suspected knee ligament injury, while Curtis had to leave the pitch early on with a hamstring problem.
The expected absence of this trio will be a huge blow to McLoughlin, as all three have contributed a lot to this generally young side.
While the team has returned to training, it’s not yet clear if any additional players will be introduced to the squad given their injury problems.
The opening qualifier round will take place on the weekend of June 9-10, with the full fixtures details to be announced by the C.C.C.C. today (Tuesday).
