Albion seal title with derby win

Last two cup deciders set for Curracloe on Saturday

-

WEXFORD ALBION are the new Under-13 Division 1A champions in the Wexford and District Schoolboys Soccer League after wrapping up the crown on Thursday evening.

The Kennedy Park boys came into the week in a strong position and didn’t take any chances against North End.

Instead they were exceptional, winning 5-2 in a cracking encounter, meaning that Fastnet Rovers could no longer catch them in the table. The Rathangan boys will instead need to finish their season in strong form to leapfrog Blackwater and snag second spot.

Two titles are still up for grabs. A Gorey Rangers ‘B’ win over Cushinstown means they will need a play-off with Bridge Rovers ‘B’ to decide the winner of the Under-12 Division 4A title.

Meanwhile, Moyne Rangers just need to avoid defeat in the Under-13 Division 1 title decider against Gorey Rangers to take the crown.

The last two cup finals are down for decision this coming Saturday. At 11 a.m. in Curracloe, the Under-11 final, pitting Camolin Celtic and Forth Celtic, takes place.

Camolin have knocked out Moyne and North End in the last two rounds so will be confident of taking another scalp.

As the bigger club, Forth Celtic will go into the game as favourites. They knocked Wexford Albion out in round two and accounted for a talented New Ross Town side in the last four, so it promises to be a cracking final.

Then, at 1 p.m. it’s the turn of the Under-12 finalists. This game has the potential to be one of the most exciting deciders in recent times as both Bunclody and Cloughbawn like to go out and attack their opponents and play expansive, exciting football.

Cloughbawn struggled through some of the early rounds but ground out results, that was until they visited Gorey Celtic in the semi-final and put on a stellar display to win 4-1.

Meanwhile, Bunclody dispatched North End and are coming into this match with a perfect record this season, so it really is anybody’s cup to win.

Meanwhile, the Wexford Yellow Under-12 team beat Carlow 4-2 on penalties in the final of the Tracey Lawlor Memorial Cup in Courtown on Sunday after it finished 0-0 in normal time.

In the Alex Robinson Memorial Cup, Wexford Purple were edged by Wicklow 3-0.

Finally, there was better news for the Wexford Under-13 side. They travelled to Tipperary over the weekend and managed to come back with the Cremin Cup, beating Kildare 4-1 to take the crown.
