Top players honoured on night of celebration

-

THE WEXFORD Football League held their annual player of the year awards in the Horse and Hound in Ballinaboola on Friday night.

In his Chairman’s address, Denis Hennessy thanked Brendan Murphy for his continued support and the staff for the excellent meal which was served.

He thanked Gertrude Rowlands and Seán Parker for all their hard work organising everything around the function.

The Fixtures Secretary, clubs and the Referees’ Society were praised for their help and co-operation for getting through the fixtures backlog due to adverse weather conditions earlier in the year. He congratulated all of the award winners, league and cup winners, with a special mention for the FAI Junior Cup winners, North End United, and FAI Under-17 school champions, St. Mary’s C.B.S., Enniscorthy.

The master of ceremonies Liam Spratt, entertained the attendance as only he can throughout the awards ceremony, with very few winners avoiding some witty comment.

After the Youth and Junior awards were presented by the Chairman, Pádraig Whitty presented the Pat Whitty Special Merit Award to John Godkin of North End United for his long service as manager.

Incidentally, this award winner had already been chosen before North End‘s historic victory.

The League Chairman closed proceedings with a special award to North End to mark their wonderful achievement.

A most enjoyable night closed with some music, with many of the clubs getting in some pre-season practice on the dancefloor.
