The Boyne trophy team members were unfortunately defeated by Waterford on Saturday in hurricane-like Rosslare winds similar to the winds Rory McIlroy is experiencing at Wentworth, no doubt. Bravo to managers, team and supporters.

Next week’s competition is 18-hole singles stableford, a Valerie Doyle qualifier sponsored by Martin’s Jewellers.

Well played and hard luck to our Senior Cup team, Intermediate Cup team and Junior Foursomes team, all unfortunately beaten last weekend in inter-club competitons.

Today (Tuesday, May 29), the Boyne Trophy team will take on Dunmore East (two home, three away) at 2.30 p.m. Best of luck to all players, caddies and managers.

Please come and support the team and see some wonderful competitive golf.

WEXFORD

In what was a good weekend for our teams remaining in their various competitions, our All-Ireland fourball team took pride of place after a great 3 and 2 win over Castlecomer.

The team members are now into the quarter-final of the competition. The team was Mick Fortune, Jimmy Thomas, Mark Codd, Pat Moorehouse, Andy O’Brien, Bobby Cummins, Tom Connon, Ian Murphy, James Bridges and John O’Brien.

The Fred Daly team also had a good win in defeating Wicklow, and have progressed to the quarter-final stage of this competition.

Tuesday’s Seniors competition was scramble and was won by the team of Joe Scott, Jan Jenkins, Paul Lauhoff and Pat Brown with 43.5. In second place were Seamus Sills, Pat Kavanagh, Brian Judd and Hubert Tunney with 44.6.

In third place were John Foley, Seán O’Keeffe, Seamus Byrne and Tom O’Donnell with 46.5.

Wednesday’s competition was an 18 holes singles event. The winner, playing off scratch, with a fantastic score of 41 points was Rhys Clarke.

Second place went to Brad Cohen with 39 points, and Paddy McGuire took third place on 37 points. Tom Connon won the vets.’ prize with 26 points.

Friday’s nine-hole competition was won by that wellknown cyclist, Seán Nolan, with 23 points, with Bobby Cummins in second place with 21 points.

Carmel Murphy was the winner of the latest Joker draw. Our super fund-raising draw is up and running with fabulous prizes on offer. Each member has been allocated two tickets which can now be collected in a personalised envelope at the bar.

The prizes range from 14-day holiday cruises, to two weeks’ holidays in Mexico/Dubai, to skiing holidays. Details may be had from Patch Doyle, Kevin Murphy or Patricia Boyd.

I omitted to mention in last week’s notes that the draw for the free sub, held recently, was won by Fintan Whyte.

In the first round of the South Leinster, we had a very convincing 6/1 win over St. Helen’s.

NEW ROSS SENIORS

At last it was short sleeve weather on Thursday when 13 teams enjoyed their golf in overcast but warm conditions.

We had a spattering of rain near the end of the round but it didn’t even keep down the dust that fell. The course was in immaculate condition, compliments to Seamus and the course staff who have done a terrific job in restoring it after the battering it received over the long winter which we endured.

Playing our favoured champagne scramble format, which is the one most suitable to the ageing profile of our members, we had some fantastic scoring returns. There is no doubt that this format leads to an enjoyable game for all, even if you are not in the winners’ enclosure.

Eleven of the 13 teams all broke the 90-point target whilst the remaining two teams posted very creditable scores of 89 points.

However, on this occasion we had dark horses in four high handicappers who brought in an incredible score of 108 points.

Tony Redmond (17), Pat Traynor (18), Kenny Irwin (22) and Frank Boyle (23) took the honours with an outward nine of 56 points to which they added 52 points on the tougher back nine to come home well clear of the rest.

Second with an excellent tally of 100 points came Michael Brennan (19), Patsy Farrell (20), Billy Redmond (21) and Aidan Wallace (27), whilst Tommy Ryan (15), Dick O’Neill (18), John Joe Murray (21) and Tom Kent (26) were placed third with 97 points.

Nearest the pin prize on the ninth hole went to Eddie Keher with an effort some 89 inches from the pin.

All players intending to travel to Waterford Castle on Monday, June 18, should hand in their names and the all-in fee of €25 next Thursday, May 31, to enable teams and tee times to be announced on Thursday, June 10. Your kind co-operation in this regard would be much appreciated.

On the board for June are Willie Whitty, John Murphy and Larry Shannon.

NEW ROSS LADIES

It’s a great lift to see an improvement in the weather, temperatures rising slightly, sunshine, and our golf course getting back to normal conditions.

Our competition on Wednesday, May 9, was cancelled due to lack of entries and bad weather. However, our sponsor, Sweeney’s Garden Centre, insisted on giving an extra first prize for that day.

Results: 1, Bridget Murphy (25), 36 points (last nine); 2, Mary J. Maher (28), 36 points.

Wednesday, May 16, was a more favourable day with lots of sunshine for our competition, sponsored by Sweeney’s Garden Centre.

Results: 1, Teresa Foley (15), 38 points; 2, Marguerite Sutton (22), 36 points (last nine): 3, Anne Banville (23), 36 points; Cat. 1, Mary Shannon (17), 34 points; Cat. 2, Margaret Murphy (23), 35 points; Cat. 3, Angus Whelan (30), 33 points; Senior, Jean Russell (21), 29 points.

Thank you to all who were at the presentation, and to our sponsors, Eddie and Bernie Sweeney, for their continued support every year.

Another reminder to book your slot for our lady Captain Maeve’s charity day and pink day in aid of the National Breast Cancer Research Institute which will be held on May 30. It is an open fourball for men and women, and please invite your friends.

We plan to have a fun and social day, running a putting competition and a raffle. There will also be a prize for the best dressed lady in pink!

‘Sharpen Your Short Game’ which was organised by Marie Therese Wall was a brilliant success over the past weeks.

The overall nine-hole par three competition was won by Mary Finn with 20 points.

Second was Rita Furlong with 19 points, and third was Mary J. Maher with 13 points.

Well done to the Junior foursomes team, managed by Tess Ryan, which gained a victory against Tramore in Waterford - Teresa Foley and Marguerite Sutton, Teresa Byrne and Anne Curtis (Adm.), and Mary Shannon and Adeline Foxe. Well done girls.

Thank you to the members who travelled to support us. It means so much to all the teams to have that support and encouragement.

On the inter-club scene, Rosslare had mixed luck over the last week, winning one and failing to qualify in the other.

The South Leinster team had a great win over Bunclody but unfortunately the Pierce Purcell team of Tony Wright and Willie Ennis, Peter Cafferkey and Keith Deacon, John Hanrick and Ger Doyle, Mick Brosnan and Jim Hore, and Shay Davis and Cormac Quigley, failed to qualify in Wexford.
