FOREST FIRE

On Friday afternoon just before 4 p.m., the fire started and quickly spread through the young forest, destroying all in its path. New Ross Fire Crew’s quickly arrived on the scene with two brigades, but had to contend with very rough terrain, a further fire crew from Wexford came to help. They fought throughout the night to contain the blaze, having to bring water from the Barracks River, at times the fire appeared to be blazing in many different parts of the forest.

Unfortunately it started again on Saturday morning. Later in the day Coillte’s Forestry Manager Mr Liam Stafford ordered in helicopter to help deal with the fire, the helicopter carried 400 litres of water from a local lake on many trips over one and a half hours, and thankfully were able to declare the area safe on Saturday evening. A word of praise and thanks to all the fire crew for their valiant work under very tough conditions.

This area is regularly used as a rubbish dump and some months ago a car was set on fire there, it is such a shame to see a beautiful forest reduced to such a blackened state, around 15 hectares of land affected, with a cost in the region of €200,000 to Coillte.

CLONGEEN GRAVESTONES

A recording of old inscriptions on the old graveyard in Clongeen is presently on the way. Some people from the Adamstown and Raheen area have relations and friends buried in the old graveyard cemetery. Unfortunately some of the inscription have faded away and are almost totally illegible due to weathering. Your help is required if your people’s headstone no longer bears the information as it once did and is important to preserve. Please ring 087 2363903 for more info.

SYMPATHY

Our condolences to the Whitty and Hayden families on the death of Tommy Whitty, Oldcourt, who died on Tuesday, May 15, Predeceased by his wife Bernie (Hayden), Tommy was a lifelong pioneer. In his earlier life he was deeply involved in drama, a staunch Fianna Fail supporter and a member of the VEC.

He fought tirelessly for our Vocational School to prevent cut backs in the early eighties. He was convinced that a good education was the way forward for our young people. He lived to see his dream come to fruition a few years ago with the building of a fine new college at Adamstown Cross.

Tommy will be sadly missed by his nephews, nieces, relatives and friends. His funeral Mass was celebrated recently in St Abban’s Church with burial with the adjoining cemetery. May his kind soul rest in peace.

SYMPATHY also to the Rothwell family on the death of Percy Rothwell, Borovale on Sunday, May 13. His funeral service took place in St Peter’s Church, Rossdroit with burial afterwards in the adjoining graveyard. May his kind soul rest in peace.
