Man arrested after massive €300,000 drug haul in Carne
CANNABIS AND COCAINE WORTH €300,000 SEIZED AS DRUGS UNIT SWOOPS ON HOUSE IN CARNE
A MAN in his early 30s was arrested and questioned after gardaí swooped on a house in Carne over the bank holiday weekend and seized almost €300,000 worth of cannabis and cocaine. The operation was carried out at midday last Saturday by members of the Wexford District Drugs Unit who obtained a warrant to search the house as part of an ongoing investigation into the sale and supply of illegal substances. Local councillor Ger Carthy said he wished to congratulate the officers involved in removing such a substantial quanity of drugs from the streets of Wexford.
The seizure by Wexford gardai of almost €300,000 worth of cocaine and cannabis from a house in Carne, has been commended by councillor Ger Carthy who said the operation highlights the important role to be played by rural gardai in monitoring suspicious activity in local areas.
Gardai from the Wexford District Drugs Unit raided the house in Carne on foot of a search warrant at approximately 12 noon on Saturday last and uncovered a large haul of cannabis resin, cannabis herb and cocaine with an estimated street value of €299,000, subject to analysis.
The search was part of an ongoing investigation into the sale and supply of illegal drugs and the seizure is one of the biggest in the Wexford area in recent times.
A man in his early thirties was arrested at the scene and was detained in Wexford Garda Station for questioning under Section 2 of the Drug Trafficking Act, 1996.
He was later released without charge and a file is currently being prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions.
Independent councillor Ger Carthy who lives in Our Lady’s Island said he wanted to congratulate Wexford gardai on their success in removing such a large quantity of drugs off the streets of County Wexford.
‘Drugs have no place in Irish society as far as I’m concerned. I believe from talking to senior officers that the operation was intelligence led. That is why we must re-iterate the need for local gardai in rural Ireland.’
‘I would like to commend the gardai who were involved in taking this substantial amount of illegal substances off the market. It underlines the importance of having local gardai to monitor the comings and goings of those involved in crime. We have two very proactive members of the force in this area’.
‘This has happened against the backdrop of a depletion in the manpower of the drugs squad in Wexford as a result of cuts. That is something I have raised on a number of occasions on the Council’s Joint Policing Committee’, he said.
