THE FAYTHE SCHOOL EARNS ‘MAGNIFICENT SEVENTH’ GREEN FLAG
YEARS OF work culminated in a remarkable achievement for the staff and pupils at St John of God’s National School in The Faythe recently.
The school was recently awarded its seventh Green Flag, for Global Citzenship, at a ceremony in Kilkenny, making them one of just ten Wexford schools to achieve such a feat. Pupils Jade Malone from the Green School Committee and Ben Gulliver from the Student Council, accompanied by deputy principal Anne Griffin-Jones and special needs assistant Liz O’Brien, travelled to Kilkenny to accept the flag.
School principal Liam Turner pointed out that the school’s dedication to the Green Flag programme was especially noteworthy when you considered that fact that the Junior Infant class, when the first flag was applied for, are now just weeks away from doing their Leaving Cert exams!
The school was also awarded its 11th Science Foundation of Ireland – Discover Primary Maths and Science Plaque for Excellence, for its work in the these two areas.
For the past decade and a half, under the continuous guidance of teacher Rita Conroy and various teacher volunteers, the school has ensured that science and maths are part of everyday school life from Infant classes up to sixth class. Scientific skills such as questioning, predicting, observing, measuring and recording are part of everyday school life, with regualar trips, speaker visits, Science Week and other events taking place throughout the year. One of the highlights this year was the Science Workshop conducted by ‘The Mad Scientist’, Paul Furey, in March.
