Oxtail Oscar wins big race
Cancer Society gala night
AS EXPECTED, there was a huge crowd in attendance at Enniscorthy Greyhound Track on Thursday for the gala race night in aid of the Irish Cancer Society, and a brilliant sum of over €13,000 was raised.
The glorious weather made for a very enjoyable night, and there was some excellent action on track.
The feature race, the €2,000 final of the Dinny Byrne Memorial A5/6 Stake, produced a very good race as the James Whelan-owned Oxtail Oscar broke well again as she did in the semi.
And it proved the winning of the final for her as she led around the opening corners, with trap two’s Ontheverge in hot pursuit and trap six runner, Nothingtosay, also on the premises as they closed in on the leader approaching the third bend.
Oxtail was not for passing as she stuck it out gamely to hold Ontheverge snugly enough in the end in a time of 28.93.
Race four, an A3 575, saw the Peter Nolan-owned Flying Lola get a somewhat overdue win as this consistent sort has been knocking on the door in her latest starts.
It opened here as she broke well and made her draw count to score in fine style in a good 31.52.
The last race of the night was over 550 yards, and it saw a fine run from Piercestown Moll, owned by Seamus ‘Shanks’ Whelan.
She was scoring for the 21st time, breaking well to lead up and running right away from her field to score one of her easiest wins in a very good 30.17.
Unfortunately, the flying Cushie Jet had no luck in the big Red Mills Champion Unraced final at Kilkenny as he was somewhat hampered from traps on the run to the first bend and was shuffled back as a result.
He ran on well to be a close fourth in the circumstances and has a very bright future.
