We had a glorious day for our Captain Martin’s prize to the ladies. Thank you Martin for your good luck wishes and for welcoming each of us onto the first tee.

Congratulations to the Challenge Cup team members, managed by Marie Therese Wall, who again were never really in trouble as they cruised to victory against their opponents in Gowran on Friday. It was another brilliant performance ladies, well done.

NEW ROSS SENIORS

It was a rather pleasant day for golf on Thursday, with overcast skies but still rather warm temperatures prevailing.

We had a smaller entry than usual due to a variety of circumstances, but those who did play enjoyed the keen competition which prevails among the Seniors group.

Again, scoring was high in the favoured champagne scramble format which gives everyone a fair chance of figuring, therefore adding to the enjoyment of all players.

However, there was no enjoyment for the winning team who found themselves disqualified for having wrong scores on their card, an error they freely admitted to. In the re-check it took a countback before the new victors could be declared.

Willie Byrne (17), Hughie O’Connor (18), Robert O’Dwyer (21) and Donie Cody (23) took the honours with 97 points by virtue of a better back nine (50/44).

On the same tally (97 points) and in second place came Tony Harford (13), Billy Redmond (21), Michael Long (21) and Tom Kent (26). Third were Denis Kirwan (14), Willie Naddy (20), Martin Forristal (20) and Fr. Jim Curtis (22) with 96 points.

We have our normal game next Thursday when the final names for our outing to Waterford Castle on Monday, June 18, will be taken and the all-in fee is €20.

Teams and tee-times will be in the ‘New Ross Standard’ on Tuesday, June 12. On the board for June are John Murphy, Willie Whitty and Larry Shannon.

PAULINE’S SOCIETY

Our visit to the Gold Coast golf course was rewarded with a lovely sunny day, and was the first outing in the new Captain Brendan Byrne’s term in office.

Once again that man Colin Fenlon stole the show, with a good score taking the first place. He was followed closely behind by Pat Furlong and Brendan Dunne who ended up with level scores.

Pat took second place on the countback. Nearest to the pin prizes went to Frank McGuinness and Colin Fenlon.

Our next venture will be to tackle the beautiful and challenging Coollattin golf course. This will take place on Saturday, June 16, with tee-off at 10 a.m.

Those intending to travel should as usual put their names on the sheet in Pauline’s Bar before 8 p.m. on Tuesday, June 12.

Please note that those who are travelling to the course should allow an hour to make the journey, and please arrive at least half an hour before the appointed tee-time.
