SAFEGUARDING SESSION
There will be a Safeguarding information session in the Riverside Park hotel, Enniscorthy on Monday, June 11, from seven to 9 p.m for Crossabeg and Ballymurn. All parish staff and volunteers are asked to attend. This session will focus on the practical ways in which we can ensure good safeguarding so that the parish environment in which our children are involved is safe for them and for the adults that work with them.
APPRECIATION
Billy Burke would like to let the people of Crossabeg know that he is back in his house in Crory and a as a gesture of thanks for their generosity, there will be a bus on Friday, June 8, at 7.30 p.m. for everyone who collected and gave to his fire collection.
ATHLETICS
There were some fine results for St Killian’s juvenile athletes from day two of the county championships held on Sunday week last at the Hub in Enniscorthy. A total of 14 individual and two Relay team medals were won by the boys and girls.
Anna Finan took silver in the 80m under-15; Sonia Milbourne won gold in the 80m under-16; Emma McCarthy won gold in the under-11 High Jump; gold in the 600m and bronze in the Turbo Javelin; Jack Forde won gold in the under-16 High Jump, silver in the 200M, gold in the Shot Putt and gold in the Triple Jump. Kayla Doyle-Kavanagh won silver in the 60m sprint under-10; Kara Morrissey won gold in the 60m under-12 sprint; Grace Flanagan won gold in the Shot Putt under-18; Billy Reck won bronze in the Shot Putt under-16; and Paul Freeman won gold in the under-eight00m under-18. The under-10 girls Relay team of Kayla Doyle-Kavanagh, Keelin Boggan, Cara Murphy and Emma McCarthy won the bronze medals and the girls’ under-12 Relay team of Kara Morrissey, Chloe Reck, Emma McCarthy and Aoife McEldowney took the silver medals.
NATIONAL CHAMPION
While most of the youngsters from St Killian’s were competing at day two of the county championships in Enniscorthy, great news came through from Santry with the news that Jack Forde had won the National Combines with an impressive grand total of 3914 points over five events. This included two personal bests, 5.75m in the Long Jump and a huge 1.83m in the High Jump. This gold medal win makes him National Champion two years consecutively and adds to his National Indoor title in this event earlier this year. Well done Jack and to his dedicated coaches at St Killian’s Athletic Club.
COMMUNITY GAMES
Well done to all the young boys and girls representing the local area, who competed at the national finals in university of Limerick last week. They were competing in art, Handwriting, Projects, singing. The standard in all of these events was extremely high, so although they finished outside of the medals, they can feel proud of themselves as they are all champions. The children came from Crossabeg, Oylegate and Ballymurn,
A huge ‘thank you’ to the parents who travelled with them to Limerick and to the teachers in the various schools who helped the local committee get the children ready for the competitions. We are all so proud of the children. Those, who competed were Ros Walker, Jonathan Winters, Abby Dooley, Conor Somers, Carys Jones. Aoibhinn McDonald, Ann Molloy, Christina Molloy.
On Thursday evening of last week, the area competed in the semi-final of the boys’ under-13 Rounders competition. They took on a team from the Newbawn/Raheen Area and were comfortable winners and had one innings to spare at the end. They now take on a team from Piercestown-Murrintown in the county final. The girls’ under-13 Rounders team will also take on a team from Piercestown-Murrintown in the county final. Both of these games take place this week.
STUDENTS WIN AWARDS
Selskar College, Presentation, Loreto, CBS and St Peter’s College students were rewarded with presentations at their end of year awards ceremonies last week.
Congratulations to all local boys and girls who were acknowledged, among them Cian Kinlough, Monmore (Junior Cert Gold Medal with St Peter’s College; Jack Forde, Garrycleary (Third year Academic award and Field Athlete of the Year for CBS) Amy Forde, Garrycleary (Athletics, Discus thrower with Loreto Convent) and Sally Shortle, Kyle (Head Girl with Presentation)
GARDEN EVENING
Castlebridge Show committee are holding a garden evening with Syl Doyle of Wilton nursery, Bree, on Wednesday, June 20, in the Community Garden Castlebridge at 7.30 p.m. Syl will do a walk and talk evening around the gardens and answer any questions you may have. He will also have a selection of plants for sale. Tea, coffee and some delicious home baking will be served after the talk and admission is free. The committee look forward to seeing you there.
