Town honour for panto society
FIFTY YEARS of entertainment was marked at a civic reception for Wexford Pantomime Society, in the Irish National Heritage Park.
The group, which enjoyed a sell-out production of ‘Cinderella’ in January, celebrated the milestone with a New Year’s ball and Mayor Cllr Jim Moore awarded them with a civic reception, to honour their acehivement. The event was attended by councillors Tony Dempsey and Davy Hynes, who joined group members, past and present.
Cllr Moore spoke proudly of the association Wexford Pantomime Society had, not only in entertaining audiences over the years, but also the singing, dancing and musical theatre training it had provided for the young people of the town and district. He emphasised the importance of participation in the arts, saying it provided a wonderful outlet for young people in a time when there is heightened importance on mental health and wellbeing.
Following speeches from Lee Hynes (chairperson) and Tom O’Leary (director), who both thanked the current and past members of the society for their continued support throughout the years, Cllr Moore presented a plaque to honour the anniversary. This plaque will be placed in the society’s home, the Dun Mhuire, in the weeks to come.
