FROM NORMANS TO WORLD WARS AT RACECOURSE

- By BRENDAN KEANE

THE ANNUAL Wexford Military Show held recently at Wexford Racecourse was a great success and the brilliant weather that prevailed added to the atmosphere for those in attendance.

One of the most anticipated events on the local social calendar it attracted military enthusiasts from across the south east. Visitors got to see a wide variety of army equipment with British and American army jeeps proving particularly popular.

Members of the Jofue Drengir group were in attendance at the show and performed re-enactments of Norman and Viking themed battles. The attention to detail of all the groups involved in such re-enactments was amazing with the majority of the uniforms and equipment being authentic ex-army stock while the older Norman and Viking outfits were based on authentic designs and creative techniques.

The Vietnam Geese group performed mock mortar battles which drew a lot of attention from onlookers.

From daggers and swords to muskets and machine-guns the show highlighted various aspects of war in precise detail. There were also some trade stalls on-site offering visitors a wide range of military memorabilia including badges, pins, emblems, photos, guns, and cartridge shells along with ancillary equipment like canteens, water bottles and jerry cans.

The site was well laid out with troop tents separated by a walking path allowing visitors great access to the attractions. It was a great weekend of entertainment under a backdrop of sunny blue skies.
