COURTOWN LADIES

Tuesday, June 5, saw our first ladies’ open of the summer, and what a great day it brought. Visitors from many clubs signed up to play and conditions could not have been better.

The competition was sponsored by Joe Butler and Ingrid Ashmore-Butler of Middletown House Nursing Home. Joe and Ingrid are truly valued sponsors who have been supporting a ladies’ competition for a number of years now.

Their prize is always hotly contested. The prize table was absolutely fantastic and many of us regretted the missed putts and stray shots that saw us out of the winners’ enclosure.

Results: 1, Doris Doyle (23), 41 points; 2, Bríd Lillis (36), 37 points; gross, Sorcha Howell (3), 31 points; 3, Brenda Foster (36), 37 points (countback); 4, Pauline Murphy (36), 36 points (countback).

The nine-hole competition was won by Phil Clancy (36/18) with 18 points, and second was Muriel Richards (28/13) with 16 points. Well done all you lucky winners.

Tuesday, June 12, will be sponsored by McGuire Diamonds, another great day of ladies’ golf to look forward to.

COURTOWN

We had a brilliant start to our open week at Courtown when the sun shone on us for our first day, which was a two-person team event sponsored by Nelson Hydraulics (Alan Grey).

We had a full timesheet for the first competition of the week, and we hope that the trend continues for the rest of the week. The course was in fantastic condition, and open week is certainly a great way to show off the wonderful facility that we have in Courtown.

On Saturday, members and visitors alike could not but be impressed by the manner in which the course was presented.

The format for Alan’s competition was a little unusual, with both players returning scores for the par fours and one score to count on the par threes and fives. It was a new and exciting idea. Open week continues until Sunday.

We had a very large turn-out for the John Burke Classic which was held on bank holiday Monday, and we were delighted to have John himself present in the clubhouse that evening to present the prizes to the winners.

The final sum for the classic has not yet been disclosed, but it will be presented to John and his family on our Blue and Pink Day. As most members are aware, John - who is a long-time member of our greens staff - has been battling a serious illness for some time now, and we all wish him well in his recovery process.

Sunday, June 3, fourball sponsored by Whitmore Jewellers: 1, Joey O’Brien (14), Larry O’Brien (19), 47 points; 2, Pat Ruane (4, Rathdowney), Mick Carty (15), 46 points; 3, Ian McGirr (5), Jared McGirr (10), 42 points (last nine).

The Junior Cup, with two to qualify from ten, was played on June 9 and 10 in Rosslare. We played Borris, Rosslare, Courtown, Wexford, Waterford, New Ross, Coollattin, Bunclody and Ballymoney in the group qualifiers, and that is the order they finished in after the first day’s play, with Enniscorthy winning by three.

The final, against Borris, was played on Sunday morning and we won on a scoreline of three games to two to advance to the Leinster finals weekend in Carlow July 28 and 29. This makes it three years in succession we have won our qualifying round.

Brian Balfe, Joe Delaney and James Morrissey got the wins, while Joe Kelly and Martin Sludds battled hard before eventually losing to our Borris opponents. David Mernagh also played his part in the win, having played in the qualifier before being replaced by Brian Balfe for the matchplay. Congratulations to all concerned.

The Provincial Towns Cup team had a great win on Saturday against Courtown, winning four matches at home and two away, with final match at home called in.

Willie Dobbs and Thomas Kielthy got the all-important away wins while Davie Murphy, Eddie Balfe, James Sheridan and Anthony Byrne got the wins at home.

Eddie Doyle was called in at home while James Foley and Denis Dunbar fought hard before going down in Courtown. Next up is a quarter-final against the winners of Waterford and Kilkenny.

The ever-popular ladies’ and gents’ open singles is open to all membership categories. If you know of anyone who might be interested in this competition, then please bring them along.

NEW ROSS SENIORS

‘Oh, what a beautiful morning, oh, what a beautiful day’. Oklahoma eat your heart out, Tinneranny basked in sunshine, and we had that beautiful morning and day for our outing on Thursday.

Tanned legs, pale legs, and legs of a different hue all made their appearances among the 13 competing teams in ideal golfing weather, with a gentle northerly breeze fanning the course.

The camaraderie that exists among the Seniors group was again very evident in our champagne scramble format, and indeed the scoring was likewise with only one point separating the three top teams (eleven broke the 90 points target).

It was a case of this three equals any four when the threesome of Denis Kirwan (14), John Coleman (20) and Robert O’Dwyer (21) shot 94 points to emerge winners.

As a result of a countback over the last nine holes (45/44), Dick Cuddihy (15), Willie Naddy (20), Jim Kehoe (25) and Tom Furlong (26) eventually were placed second with 93 points.

On the same score (93 points) and placed third were Hughie O’Connor (18), Willie Kelly (18), Mick Long (20) and Oliver Brennan (27).

Nearest the pin prizes were won by Patsy Farrell on the ninth hole and Denis Kirwan on the eleventh.

We have no game next Thursday as the club open week three-person scramble is booked in. Our next game is on June 21 when to clear up any confusion we play off the yellow discs for the remainder of the summer as agreed previously with head greenkeeper, Seamus Power.

Our teams and tee-times for Waterford Castle Golf Club on Monday, June 18, are: 10.30 a.m., Jim ‘Ross’ Ryan, Pat Traynor, Michael Brennan, Donie Cody; 10.38 a.m., Denis Kirwan, Willie Whitty, Willie Naddy, Jamesie Murphy; 10.46 a.m., Tony Harford, Tommy Ryan, Tommy Kehoe, Jim Kehoe; 10.54 a.m., John Browne, John Coleman, Larry Shannon, Tom Kent; 11.02 a.m., Ray Shannon, Frank Boyle, Kenny Irwin, Les Jastrebski; 11.10 a.m., John Kennedy, John F. Roche, Paddy Mahony, J.J. Murray; 11.18 a.m., Andy Ronan, Tony Redmond, Tony Sexton, Colin Casey; 11.26 a.m., Eamon Delaney, Billy Redmond, Liam Glasheen, A.N. Other.

Wednesday’s competition was sponsored by Paul and James in the Pro Shop, and the scores that came in were very high.

Results: 1, Bernadette Murphy (31), 40 points; 2, Marie O’Connor (31), 39 points (last nine); 3, Mary J. Maher (29), 39 points (last nine); 4, Adeline Foxe (22), 39 points (last six); Senior, Breda McManus (23), 38 points.
