NEW BOOK DIVES INTO WEXFORD’S FASCINATING MARITIME HISTORY
RENOWNED HISTORIAN Ernie Shepherd will launch a fascinating book, detailing Wexford’s maritime history, at 6 p.m. on June 14 in Wexford town library.
The book ‘Wexford Harbour Commissioners: A History 1794 - 2010’ will explore the county’s rich maritime history, and the development and maintenance of its port and, given the extensive research by the author, it is sure to interest maritime enthusiasts from far and near. The book documents an important journey through the history of Wexford port which has been pivotal to the development of the town and county.
The Wexford Harbour Commissioners, an elected body of commissioners, were responsible for raising money for the maintenance and improvement of Wexford Harbour. Their work was document in Minute Books which are preserved at the Wexford County Archive, where County Archivist Grainne Doran was of invaluable assistance.
The book is also a wonderful tribute to the Wexford people who managed what was a thriving port, taking responsibility for cargoes from far and wide, exported and imported on ships of all shapes and sizes, many of whose names are etched on plaques all along ‘the old wooden works’ or Wexford Quay.
The book recounts the contribution of the many pilots and administration staff who played an important role in the development of Wexford through the centuries.
John Carley, Director of Services with Wexford County Council, said: ‘This is a book of particular interest to all of us who have an interest in the sea. It is important that history is preserved and this book is testament to the hardworking men and women who worked for the Wexford Harbour Commissioners and who, in no small way, contributed to the remarkable town and county of Wexford that exists today.’
