€1m price tag on house, castle and 77 acres
A PERIOD house and castle, set over 77 acres in Ballycogley, is for sale with an advised minimum value of €1 million.
Ballycogley House and Castle is being sold by Kehoe and Associates and will, if not sold beforehand, go to public auction on July 19 at 3 p.m. in Kehoe’s auction rooms at Commercial Quay.
The period house is close to the ruins of Ballycogley Castle and is surrounded by a number of outbuildings. Covering 4,413 square feet, it has five bedrooms on the first floor, along with the outbuildings which offer the opportunity to convert to a self-contained apartment. The land is laid out in ten principle divisions, together with some small paddocks around the house. It has extensive frontage onto the Wexford to Kilmore Road and a minor road, which the main entrance is situated on.
The surrounding lands have been well farmed through the years and are highly productive, sound free-draining parcels. All land is currently in tillage and in suitable divisions for its size.
The original Ballycogley Castle, dating probably from the 13th century, still stands and although it is now in poor shape, it is steeped in history, having been the home place of the Wadding family, who were among the early colonists that planted in Forth and Bargy.
Of that family, Robert Wadding was chief sergeant of Wexford from 1356 to 1357 and Thomas Wadding was sheriff of Wexford in 1383. The Castle also has the distinction of being the birthplace of the Most Reverend Luke Wadding, Bishop of Ferns in 1679.
