Castletown emphasise quality in Under-13 victory

-

IT WAS a quiet week in the People Newspapers Coiste na nÓg championships this past seven days as the exam age groups continued to observe their mid-season break.

Meanwhile, the Under-13s did have a full slate of football fixtures but very few of those went ahead as scheduled.

In Division 1, as well as the entertaining New Ross Standard Under-13 clash between Sarsfields and Glynn-Barntown, there was a derby in the north of the county too.

Castletown have had a decent season so far and they emphasised their quality with an impressive 9-5 to 3-7 victory over Naomh Eanna.

There’s some magical stuff going on with the youngsters in the Duffry Rovers club.

They have been fantastic in the younger age groups in recent seasons, and their Under-13s are excelling in Division 2 at the moment.

This time Starlights were the victims, with the Coolree boys winning by 2-13 to 1-4 to ensure they remain out on their own at the summit.

Marshalstown-Castledockrell haven’t won all their games in Division 3 this season but they are always competitive.

That spirit is important when chances to take victory present themselves, and they were very impressive when beating Rathgarogue-Cushinstown by 3-19 to 0-12 on Tuesday.

There was a little more action in Division 4 where Ballyhogue joined St. Mary’s (Rosslare) at the top of the table with a strong 7-11 to 2-2 win over St. Joseph’s.

Kilmore proved way too strong for Geraldine O’Hanrahans, while a tight game between Taghmon-Camross and Horeswood ended with the former taking a 1-7 to 0-5 win.

While the Division 5 13-a-side competition has been riddled with walkovers, one game did go ahead last week.

Clonee have made their return to the People Newspapers championships this season and have been competitive, and they lost their latest fixtures to neighbours St. Patrick’s by 2-10 to 0-7.

The Wexford People Minor football championship returns on June 25, with four rounds scheduled to be completed by the end of July.

Na Piarsaigh currently lead the way in the Premier Division with three wins from three so far. They are joined by Shelmaliers at the summit and those sides meet on July 2.

In Roinn 1A, three Wexford town clubs are grouped together, along with two other Wexford District teams and a trio from Ross.

It’s St. Joseph’s who have made the best start to the season, and they face St. Mary’s (Maudlintown) in the first game after the break looking to protect a perfect record from their opening three games.

In Roinn 1B it’s a tale of two mini-groups. The top five have lost just three games between them, and they are led by Ballyhogue with Glynn-Barntown, Cloughbawn, Blackwater and Crossabeg-Ballymurn all in behind.

Meanwhile, St. Patrick’s, Ferns St. Aidan’s and Castletown are all looking for their first points of the season.

Finally, in Roinn 2, Hollow Rovers and Monageer-Boolavogue will look to maintain their impressive starts.

The Duffry Rovers/Marshalstown combo travel to Buffers Alley on June 25, while Monageer-Boolavogue host Kilrush looking for their third straight win on the same day.
