SÉAMUS KEHOE R.I.P.

‘Gone too soon’, ‘We lost a good man’ and ‘a big loss to family and community’ were some of the sentiments echoing around the parish last week, when news broke of the death of Séamus Kehoe, Kereight, Crossabeg, who fought a long battle with cancer and who died in a Dublin hospital on June 8.

Beloved husband of Siobhán, and father to Joseph, Seán and Liam, and brother to Michael, Mary (Kinsella) Margaret (Hogan) and Jo (McCarthy), he is sadly missed by his daughters-in-law Elaine and Aideen, grandchildren Ollie and Oisin, nephews, nieces, extended family and friends and neighbours.

Séamus was first of all a committed and devoted family man and in the last few years a proud grandfather. He gave his family his undivided attention and was always on hand to listen and to give advice. Many in the parish also came to rely on him for his straightforward talking and his great ‘one liners’. For the community a dedicated committee member and worker is gone.

A Telecom Eireann employee till his retirement some years, he still found time to give to his parish. The GAA in particular were lucky to avail of his services, where he held the position of secretary of Crossabeg-Ballymurn Bord na nÓg for 11 years and he also managed several teams in that time. From there he took on the position of chairman of the club, as well as holding the position of treasurer and a County Board Rep.

He acted as secretary of the community centre in Kilpatrick and from there went on to chairman of the committee of the new community field at Garrywilliam. He never asked others to do anything he wouldn’t do and many a time he could be seen cutting the grass, putting filling on the field roadway or just making sure everything was in order for the many clubs using the facilities.

A regular churchgoer, he also served a few tenures on the parish committee, starting from when he was a teenager. He could also be relied on to set up the loudspeaking system for field days and the annual patron again these jobs just got done.

He was also a member of the board of management during the building of the current school and was involved in establishing the Fás scheme for the community centre and parish properties, as well as being a member of the Wexford Local Development Enterprise Board.

During his earlier years, he was a member of Macra na Feirme, the Tops of the town, the local Rowing club and competed on quiz teams for Telecom Eireann. How he ever managed work, family and parish commitments one can only imagine. He truly will be missed in this parish.

His remains reposed at his home on Sunday, June 10, with removal to Crossabeg church on Monday evening and Requiem Mass on Tuesday at midday, followed by burial afterwards to the adjoining cemetery. A Guard of Honour taken from the local GAA club accompanied the hearse on both days and the large attendances for the removal and burial was testament to the respect and esteem in which he was held. May his gentle soul rest easy, God knows he has earned it. Rest in peace Séamus.

MARIE NEVILLE R.I.P.

Her extended family are left reeling with the news of the sudden death of Sunday, June 10, of Marie Neville (née Cowman, Monmore, Crossabeg) and Barnahask, Curracloe. Having attended the funeral Mass on Saturday for her cousin, Carmel Watchorn (née Fitzhenry) who could have foreseen what was to come. Marie was at home when her accidental and sudden death occurred and despite the assistance of the ambulance crew, she was pronounced dead at Wexford General hospital later that night.

Aged 84 years, she was pre-deceased by her husband Tommy in 2002 and also pre-deceased by her daughter-in-law Helen. She had been in good health right up to her death, having attended Mass in Curracloe church that morning, where as church Sacristan for over a decade, she carried out her duties with her usual efficiency and care.

Despite her failing eyesight, this did not deter her from carrying out her duties and devotion to the church where she was a regular Mass goer. Of late she had great support from the Altar Society committee members who were on hand when her coffin was carried in to the church on the Tuesday evening. They decorated the altar with her favourites flowers and made sure all the candles were lit and everything else ready for parish priest, Fr Denis Kelly to perform the funeral ceremony, such was their respect and loyalty for their comrade.

She was a much respected and committed parishioner, ever ready to offer her help and services and advice when asked. She loved her garden and tending to her flowers and vegetables as well as enjoying the company of her grandchildren, and visiting her family members.

Dear mother to Francis, Tomas, David, Áine and John-Joe and sister to Eileen, Nicky, Don and Elizabeth and the late Gerry, she will be sadly missed by her children, brothers and sisters, grandchildren, son-in-law, daughters-in-law, brother-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, extended family relatives, friends and neighbours. Her remains reposed at Mackens funeral home on Tuesday, June 12, with removal to Curracloe church at 7 p.m.

The Funeral Mass was celebrated on Wednesday morning at 11 a.m. with burial afterwards to the adjoining cemetery. A Guard of Honour taken from the Shelmalier GAA Club accompanied the coffin on its way into the church on Tuesday evening and again on the journey to the graveside. We extend our deepest condolences to her family and friends. R.I.P.
