Summer-inspired tour feels right at home in sun-drenched Wexford

- By ANNA HAYES

WEXFORD SINGER-SONGWRITER Pierce Turner will play an intimate concert in Greenacres in Wexford on July 20 as part of his latest, aptly named, Orange Coloured Sun tour.

The tour is named after one of his most popular songs, which was inspired by the hot summer evenings of Pierce’s youth in Curracloe. He said he is delighted to be back in Wexford to enjoy a summer that would rival the one that inspired his song and he is looking forward to playing the beautiful piano at Greenacres, complete with walls of fine art as props.

Referred to as ‘the Wexford Legend’ by DJ John Kelly, Pierce hopes to have a joyous evening of song and laughter to accompany the glorious weather.

Earlier this year, Pulitzer Prize winner poet Paul Muldoon presented Pierce Turner at his much-lauded Muldoon’s Picnic in New York City. Sharing the stage that night with Fintan O’Toole and The Lost Brothers, Pierce performed his classics ‘All Messed Up’ and ‘The Boy To Be With’ to a sold-out theatre and an ecstatic response. Paul also invited Pierce to play one of his shimmering keyboard solos with him and his band for the finale.

Over the years, Pierce has gathered many fans including: Joseph O’Connor who referred to him as ‘a true and beautiful and utterly unique artist’; Kevin Barry, who lauded his ‘indescribably odd and luminous and beautiful music’; Jim Sheridan who said he’d been so inspired by one of Pierce’s concerts that it drove him on to make ‘My Left Foot’; Eoin Colfer, who wrote that he was the only artist to make him laugh and cry during the same song; and Billy Roche, who described his music as ‘Ray Davis meets Brian Wilson with a little pinch of James Joyce’; as well as rave reviews from Terry George and Liam Fay.

Pierce Turner will perform at Greenacres Gallery on Friday, July 20 at 9 p.m. Doors open at 8.30 p.m. Tickets are available from Greenacres or online. He will also play venues in Dublin, Cork, Kilkenny and Kildare.
