Cllr Moore’s idea of filling in Crescent proves unpopular

-

WHEN Kilmore Quay councillor Jim Moore suggested that silt from Wexford Habour at Trinity Wharf could be used to fill in Crescent Quay, Cllr. George Lawlor stepped in and shot the idea down.

Councillors were discussing the 61-berth marina proposal in the Trinity Wharf draft master plan and Cllr. Moore said: ‘I take it that dredging will be required for the marina. If we have to apply for a foreshore and dredging licence, the time scale for that could be considerable. Have you considered that one way of getting rid of the material would be put it in the Crescent’.

Cllr. Lawlor said he did not want the idea to go out that there was any plan to fill in the ‘historic Crescent Quay’.

‘It’s a very historic part of Wexford. It’s all right for Cllr. Moore down there in Kilmore Quay’, he said.

Cllr. David Hynes said he wasn’t always inclined to agree with Cllr. Lawlor but he did on this occasion.

‘There is no proposal to fill in the Crescent’, said Chief Executive Tom Enright.

Head of Special Projects Brian Galvin told councillors that it was hoped to minimise the amount of dredging involved although a foreshore licence would still be required and the intention was to apply for a licence at the same time as the planning application is submitted to An Bord Pleanála next October.

A floating siltation breakwater system is to be built as part of the Trinity Wharf development.
