YOGA HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH FLEXIBILITY!

Well, it’s not a requirement but flexibility is a possible side effect. Yoga is unique and different from stretching and gym activities because of the refined use of the breath with movement. The posture work alone will take you only so far. Pranayama (breathwork) is used to tone, stimulate or relax the internal organs, preventing and treating various conditions. The full breadth of yoga practice includes Asana (posture), Pranayama (breathwork), Pratyahara (withdrawal from the senses), Mantra (chanting, sound) Dharana (concentration or control of the senses), and Dhyana (meditation).

All of these components can be practiced in a session and, in fact, are essential to feel the overall benefits of the practice.

HOW CAN YOGA HELP YOU AND HOW IS IT RELEVANT TO EVERYDAY LIFE?

Regular Asana practice keeps the joints supple, helps you develop strength, prevent injury and maintain healthy functional movement. A suitable class can be excellent for those with limitations or recovering from injury. Asana reduces Rajas (high/erratic energy). Pranayama (breathwork) reduces Tamas (dull/inert energy.) Once these two states are balanced you are ready to move toward meditation. These are some of the ‘tools’ that we use to affect change – of the internal terraine.

There is also the external ‘change’ we deal with in life, which is a consequence of being alive. Working with and understanding the nature of the mind using the ‘instruments’ that yoga and meditation practice give us, allows us to navigate uncertain, uncomfortable experiences and the abililty to ‘ride the intense emotions’, not avoid them.

At Sadhana, teachers are there to show you the ‘tools of the trade’ wchih anyone can learn and apply. These tools will benefit you for the rest of your life.

Linda O’Grady is Head bottle washer and Chief whip at Sadhana Yoga Studio. She says: ‘Yoga is the most well rounded system that I know for physical health, mental stability, understanding the mind, cultivating courage and kindness.’

THE BENEFITS OF ATTENDING A REPUTABLE STUDIO

With the advent of phone apps and social media, exposure to practices has really opened people up to the benefits of them, which is a wonderful thing. There is however, no substitute for building an informed, intelligent practice under the guidance of your teacher who can work with you, in person, as you embark on the journey of learning, self-awareness and growth.
