HISTORIC Cornmarket is situated in the centre of Wexford Town, close to the town centre. Origonally the area was home to a pre-Viking settlement of Irish Celts The Cornmarket name came about because it was the officially designated area where farmers would congregate to sell their Corn. The market continued to flourish after the arrival of the Normans in the 13th Century. Strict laws were introduced so that potatoes and corn could only be sold at Cornmarket, and not in other areas of the town.

The area hosts a diverse range of businesses.

Foley Opticians have been establishe­d since 1987 in Cornmarket. The practice is independen­tly owned and operated by Wexford Local Brendan Foley. Brendan graduates with a Diploma ( Honours ) in Optometry in 1984 and has been offering the people of Wexford the highest care and standard in Optometry for the past 30 years. Currently there are fantastic offers on Designer Sunglasses.

Kelly’s of Cornmarket is a long establishe­d furniture store that prides itself of its friendly service. They stock a large selection of beds and mattresses and a lovely selection of occasional furniture and sliding door wardrobes. They also now have a great range of Lift and Rise chairs and Electric Beds. In the past, this building was comprised of several different shops. It was also the location of an independen­t church called Bethesda. Up until 1832, there was a theatre located there.

The Wexford Arts Centre delivers quality exhibition­s, workshops for all ages, theatre, music, cabaret, Jazz, dance events in historic Cornmarket markethous­e since 1974. In the past, this building was used as the town hall by the Wexford Corporatio­n (known as the Wexford Borough Council in later years). The Corporatio­n used this building until its relocation to the municipal buildings in Wygram in 1951.

The building was built in 1775 and it was originally known as The Market House or The Assembly Rooms. The open arches on the front (later converted into windows) facilitate­d trading, and the top floor contained a ballroom and a supper room. In 1974, the building was converted into the Wexford Arts Centre.

The Thomas Moore Tavern is a beautiful traditiona­l Bistro Pub offering excellent food 7 days per week including evening early bird menus. Located on Cornmarket, in the Heart of Wexford Town, the Thomas Moore Tavern is one of Wexfords oldest bars. Beautifull­y restored, the Thomas Moore Tavern uses the very best of local and seasonal ingredient­s and serves lunch and evening meals in stylish surroundin­gs.

Wright Insurance Brokers was founded in 2012 by insurance industry experts and Wexford natives Tony & Breda Wright under the umbrella of Wright Group Ltd, employing over 120 people. Their national headquarte­rs are located in Cornmarket in the heart of Wexford town.
