Documentary film festival boasts a stellar line-up
THE SIXTH annual Wexford Documentary Film Festival takes place from September 21 to 23 at the Stella Maris Centre in Kilmore Quay.
The three-day festival features a host of international, national and local films. In keeping with the festival ethos, the selected films powerfully explore social, political, and environmental concerns. There will be post-screening Q&A sessions with international directors, debates, and film workshops.
The festival’s three-minute film challenge has proved a huge success with over 3,000 entries from 40 countries.
The festival opens on Friday, September 21 at 7 p.m. with a screening of ‘Another News Story’, a film charting the journey of refugees across Europe, opening on Lesbos island in Greece. The film focuses both on the refugees’ journey, and the 24-hour news gatherers in pursuit of a breaking story. This will be followed by a discussion with director Orban Wallace, Vukasin Nedeljkovic, creator of The Asylum Archives, and Dr Harry Browne, senior media lecturer in DIT.
Throughout the weekend, there will be something for everyone, including the kids as Saturday morning, from 11 a.m. is dedicated to younger members of the audience.
Other films showing include: ‘Berlin Rebel High School’ which will have its Irish première, ‘Freedom for the Wolf ’, ‘Golden Dawn, A Personal Affair’, ‘Marie-Madeline: A Female Chief ’, ‘Between a Rock and a Wave’ (Irish Premiere), ‘Gayby Baby’, ‘At the Philosopher’s School’,’Velvet Revolution’, and ‘Tickling Giants’.
There will be outreach events in St Michael’s Theatre on September 19 with the screening of ‘They Call Us Warriors’ at 8 p.m., a day of film at the Art Studio in Yola Hedge School on September 15, and a screening of short films on Culture Night (September 21) in the Bullring Mall at 8 p.m.
Wexford based filmmakers will also feature including: Els Dietvorst and Terence White whose offerings ‘I Watched the White Dogs of the Dawn’ and ‘Healing Shores’ make up the ‘Made in Kilmore Quay’ event on Sunday at 6 p.m. Also featuring are Philip Cullen, Declan Cody, Dominic Palmer, and Marja van Kampen, among others.
