RETIREMENT

The community wishes to extend the very best of everything to Fr Pat Stafford as he retires after 24 years of service as parish priest and 51 years of service as a priest of the diocese of Ferns. We thank him for all his kindness, support and compassion over the years and just want to let him know that he will be hugely missed in the area. All the best for the future Fr Stafford.

PARISH AUCTION

Parish priest Fr Pat Stafford Glynn, is selling all his antique and modern furniture, together with his household effects as a result of his retirement as parish priest of Glynn-Barntown. Some of the furniture dates back to the 1860s. Public Auction to be held on September 15 at 2.30 p.m. in Glynn Hall. Viewing of Goods on Friday, September 14, 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. and Saturday, September 15, 11 a.m.

NEW PARISH PRIEST

The community would also like to extend a very warm welcome Fr John Carroll in his new role as parish priest for the Glynn-Barntown community. Fr John will take on his duties in Glynn in addition to his current duties in Barntown and also at the Bishop’s Office, where he is Diocesan secretary and Diocesan Chancellor. We also wish Fr John the very best for the future in his new role as parish priest.

BLESSING OF SCHOOLBAGS

As another school year begins, children for both Glynn and Barntown schools are asked to bring their schoolbag (with just one book inside) to any Mass on the weekend of 15th/September 16, to ask for God’s blessing for the year ahead. Masses will take place in Barntown on Saturday at 7 p.m. and Sunday at 9 a.m. and 11.15 a.m. Masses in Glynn will take place on Saturday at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 10 a.m.

BARNTOWN ENVELOPE COLLECTION

The weekly envelope collection for last week was €507.90. €700 is the weekly target to run the curacy (which is funded by the envelope collection). Your ongoing generosity is greatly appreciate­d. It is hoped – in due course – to print similar figures, week on week for Glynn.

SOCIAL DANCING

Learn to jive, waltz, Quickstep and many more. Social dancing classes resume in Glynn Hall on Monday, September 17, at 8 p.m.Beginners and advanced – all welcome.

Also classes starting on Tuesday, September 18, and every Tuesday evening in the Horse and Hound Inn, Ballinbool­a at 8 p.m.

GIRL GUIDES

Barntown CGI, registrati­on night for Guides and Brigins tomorrow night, Wednesday, September 12, between 7 and 8 p.m. in Barntown Community Centre. No meeting that night. HOSPICE COFFEE MORNING

Pop along to O’Brien’s Londis, Larkin’s Cross on Thursday, September 20, between 7 a.m. and 2 p.m. and be part of Ireland’s largest coffee morning in aid of local hospice. We look forward to seeing you there.

BARNTOWN HERITAGE GROUP

Barntown Heritage Group have recently formed as a group which consists of a number of local volunteers. We are all about promoting and developing awareness of the huge depth of history within Barntown from famous events, historical structures and local people.

To achieve this we hope to work on a number of projects each year. At the moment we are working on resurrecti­ng the Three Rocks Trail. This trail takes you through a historical journey of the famous three Rocks 1798 battle which was a huge part of the 1798 rebellion.

We will be adding informatio­n about our group’s plans and progress on the Barntown.ie website. We are always looking for anyone interested in getting involved and would be delighted to hear from you. Please send an email to barntown.ie@gmail.com or for more info contact Anne at 089 4316353.

WELCOME TO BARNTOWN – The new ‘Failte go Baile an Bharunaigh’ stonework, represents some of Barntown’s most well known Heritage points. Barntown Heritage Group would like to thank Liam O’Keeffe and Paddy Stafford for the work on the foundation, PJ Caulfield for the excellent work on the outer stone and structure, Martin Nolan for the outstandin­g centrepiec­e stone, Michael Brazzill (design and planning), Paul Brazzill (setting out and planning) and last but not least, Mayor Tony Dempsey for approving and funding these works.

CAKE SALE

A cake sale in aid of Oyster Lane Theatre Group will take place at all Masses in Barntown on September 23. Your support would be greatly appreciate­d. Come early – the produce is simply delicious and is never there for long.

BARNTOWN COMMUNITY CENTRE

Following some redecorati­on, Barntown Community Centre is now open for bookings. Any group or individual wishing to book the hall or a meeting room can contact any of our committee members or Jimmy Dempsey at 086 3858429 who will be able to advise on available times.

CAMOGIE

Our Junior team were beaten by Taghmon-Camross away on Monday evening and so exit this year’s championsh­ip – hard luck girls. Our Senior girls put in a very good performanc­e on Tuesday evening in their final group game v Oulart-The Ballagh but unfortunat­ely couldn’t close the gap and their championsh­ip has also come to a close for 2018.

Well done to the under-16 who forged on with another great win over St Martin’s on Wednesday evening.

COISTE NA NOG

Hard luck to our under-17 footballer­s beaten by Sarsfields in championsh­ip on Sunday morning 5-7 to 2-4. Our under-nines travelled to Hollymount to play Shelmalier­s on Tuesday evening where they played really well.

Well done to our under-8s who fielded three super teams v St Martin’s on Wednesday evening.

Well done to the club boys who competed in the finals of the under-11 Kent Stainless football skills league in Ferns Centre of Excellence last weekend. The Blue team played Taghmon-Camross and the Green team played Castletown in two great games.

SENIOR GAA

Hard luck to our junior footballer­s who were beaten by Rathgarogu­e-Cushinstow­n last week in championsh­ip.

Our Senior footballer­s were narrowly defeated on Friday evening in St Patrick’s by a goal by Shelmalier­s 1-10 to 0-10.

COUNTY WIDE DRAW

The club is gearing up for a one off giant fundraiser which will take place over the autumn and winter months. This is a once in a generation, large scale project which requires the support of EVERYONE in the club.

The draw will be for a first prize of a Hyundai i19 (or €12,000 cash alternativ­e) with additional excellent prizes including family holiday (or €3000), 65’ smart TV, €1,000 and many more. Tickets will be sold for €20 or three for €50 door to door county wide. To achieve our target of tickets sales we need to make best use of the window we have been allowed by Wexford GAA County Board. To make best use of this draw we need as many people involved in the club as possible.

We have been thrilled with the response and amazed by the amount of volunteers who have already come forward but we are still recruiting. Club members and friends are asked to support this draw with their time and effort. The club will also look to sell the county wide draw tickets in our own parish early in 2019.

Glynn-Barntown GAA Club would like to offer its sincerest condolence­s to the family of the late Jimmy Meyler on the sad occasion of his passing. Jimmy was a long time friend and supporter to the club and will be sadly missed. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dílis.

LADIES FOOTBALL

2018 under-12 Division 1 County Champions. Our words cannot describe the way this bunch of girls played out iof their skins on Sunday in Wexford Park. They ended their season with another fantastic win, to become Division 1 Champions. Final Score: Glynn-Barntown 4: seven Kilanerin 0: five.

Glynn-Barntown GAA, camogie, Ladies’ Football and Tennis Clubs would like to take the opportunit­y to wish Fr Patrick Stafford all the very best as he retires as our parish priest. Fr Stafford has been a great friend to the club and a huge source of support and compassion in his 24 years in our parish and we thank him for his much valued service to the community. We also offer our welcome to our new parish priest Fr John Carroll and wish him continued support and friendship within the Glynn-Barntown community.

The Taghmon History Society will launch their journal in Taghmon Community Centre in November. If you wish to renew your membership A subscripti­on of €15 would be appreciate­d before September 15 to ensure that your name is included on the subscripti­on list. This payment entitles you to a copy of the journal. ANN POWER MEMORIAL WALK

Camross ICA will hold the annual Ann Power Walk on this Sunday, September 16, leaving Camross Hall at 6 p.m. The route is approximat­ely 6.5km but participan­ts may walk whatever distance suits. The event this year is in aid of Kilmore Quay RNLI and your support would be appreciate­d. Refreshmen­ts will be served in hall afterwards.

DANCING AT CAMROSS

John Molloy got a wonderful Camross welcome on Friday last and he certainly had all our supporters on the dance floor for the entire night. The October dance will be held on Friday, October 5, with music by Checkers. Dancing from 10 p.m. till late, admission €10 including the tea.

VARIETY CONCERT

Please reserve Sunday, September 30, 8 p.m. for our annual Variety Concert with a host of entertaine­rs from all around the county. Full programme closer to the date. The event is in aid of continued hall refurbishm­ent.

HOSPICE COFFEE DAY

Denis and Breda Banville will host a coffee day in aid of hospice on Saturday, October 6, from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. at their home in Camross and will be assisted by members of Camross ICA Every cup counts. Come along and help your local hospice make a life a little brighter.

CAMROSS ICA

Our first meeting after the summer break was on Monday, September 3, in Camross Hall and started at 7 p.m. with Trina Shalloe from Sport Active Wexford, who gave us a demonstrat­ion of a new game called Scooch which comes from Canada and is quickly becoming popular among groups in Ireland. Some of the ladies had lots of fun trying this new game.

Mary Kelly thanked all the ladies involved in looking after the garden over the summer no doubt it would not have survived the summer heat without their care. Breda Banville thanked the ladies who helped at the ICA stall at the very busy and successful Rathagan Show in July.

Mr Seán Reidy came to talk to us about a new internatio­nal drama festival which is happening in New Ross soon. This festival, named after the most famous Irish American playwright who ever lived – Eugene O’Neill – will be held from 11th till October 14 and promises to be most interestin­g. It will feature a screening of the 1913 silent film of the Count of Monte Cristo starring O’Neill.

Delicious tea and scones were served by Peggy Doyle and Mary Margaret Roche. The winner of our monthly competitio­n of the ‘nicest wild bunch of flowers’ was Marianne Donnelly.

A few dates for your diary: September 16 – Anne Power Walk (6 p.m. from Camross Hall) – September 23 – Fun walk in JFK Park (meeting at 2 p.m. in Camross, walk starting at 2.30 p.m.). September 24 – Federation Meeting in St Louis Daycare Centre, Ramsgrange. October 4 Mary Kelly will be holding a cookery demonstrat­ion. Make sure you get your tickets as this will be a ‘ticket only’ event. October 6 – Breda Banville will be hosting the Wexford Hospice Coffee day (from 10 a.m. till 10 p.m.). – November 8 – Knit and Stitch Event in Dublin.

Our next meeting will be at 8 p.m. on Monday, October 1, in Camross Hall. The competitio­n will be the ‘nicest decorated cooking apple’.

Did you know that the age for joining the ICA is 16? We are delighted to count a Transition Year guild in county Wexford. This could be a nice project for your TY year.

CAMROSS DRAMA GROUP

There will be a meeting for all members and anyone interested in joining on Tuesday, September 12, at 7.30 p.m. in Camross Hall. The cast and crew of Oneact Play ‘Lucy in the Sky’ had a very sucessful run in Blackwater – we thank Wayside Players for inviting us and hope they will visit Camross very soon. The applicatio­ns for the DLI One Act Festivals circuit are under way – we have already one acceptance for Goresbridg­e and we are waiting for further news. CAROREIGH NS NEWS

WELCOME BACK – We welcome back all our students and staff after the summer break, and particular­ly our new junior infants.

BEST WISHES – We send out best wishes to Ms Laura Kelly and Mr Tom Cousins on the appointmen­ts as principals in Glenmore and Adamstown schools respective­ly. Their last day with us was Wednesday, August 29, and we would like to thank them for all their work in St Garvan’s NS over the years and wish them well in their new careers.

FIRST HOLY COMMUNION – First holy communion will take place on Saturday, May 25, 2019, at midday. We look forward to this important event in the lives of the children.
