BallymoreM­ayglass KATHLEEN BROWNE FESTIVAL

The inaugural Kathleen Browne festival is being held on September 14 and 15 in Bridgetown, The event will celebrate the life of Wexford’s first lady senator who was born in 1876 and died in 1943. She made a massive contributi­on in many areas of public life in Wexford and beyond during her lifetime.

The festival will have a talk by her nephew Dr Ivor Browne on Friday the 14th in the AOH hall ar 5-30 followed by the showing of a documentar­y of his life which appeared on RTÉ TV a few years ago. The highlight on Saturday will be the festival parade followed by the unveiling of a plaque at Kathleen Browne’s place of birth in the village.

A big programme of events can be seen on the Kathleen Browne Festival web page and Facebook page with arts, literature, workshops and music being among the highlights. An event not to be missed.

BARGY VINTAGE CLUB

BALLYCOGLE­Y PLAYERS

Our 2018 AGM was held on Thursday, August 30, in Tomhaggard Social Centre and the following committee was elected for the 2018/2019 season: chairman Nick Hayes, Vice-chairman Seán Carthy, secretary and PRO Trish Boyce, Assistant secretary Mary Doyle, treasurer Terence O’Byrne, Assistant treasurer Enda Murphy, Child Protection Officer Seán Carthy, committee members Jack Allen, Chris Maddock and Gina Murphy. We look forward to another successful year of drama with ‘The Players’.

Cheque Presentati­on – A cheque for €3,000 was presented to Claire Williams and Mairead Sinnott of the Wexford Rape Crisis Centre at Tomhaggard Social Centre prior to our AGM These much needed funds were raised at the final performanc­e of our all-Ireland winning play at the Dun Mhuire Theatre in June. Well done everyone and thank you for your fantastic support for this much needed cause.

CLUB LOTTO

It is now easier than ever to play our weekly club lotto and never miss a draw by signing up to a 10-week subscripti­on for €15. Subscripti­on forms are available at most training sessions or contact Sharon at 086 1787498 to sign up. Club lotto provides vital finances for the club which allow us to continue to maintain and develop clubground facilities and your support of the lotto is very much appreciate­d. The jackpot now stands at €14,200 and there is also a match-three prize of €200 up for grabs each week, and Declan Sinnott shared in this prize. The numbers drawn last week were 10, 20, 28 and 32. POST OFFICE CLOSURE

The tiny parish of Ballymore-Mayglass was saddened to learn that the post office in Ballycogle­y was on the list of offices for closure.

Based in the shop and filling station this office was operated by the Foley family for over twenty five years having been operated by Bernies parents the O’Brien family previously for over 50 years. Though possibly not as busy as in the past it was always a good meeting place for members of the community.

We must thank Bernie and her family for providing such a valuable service to the community of the parish and surroundin­g areas. We will miss you.

ST FINTAN’S LADIES

Well done to our junior team on winning the county final and our under-10s who had a great day in portlaoise. Three adult finals in ladies’ football took place in a hot and sunny Farmleigh in the recent past. The first final that took place was Junior B between St Brigid’s Blackwater and St Fintan’s and it was the more experience­d St Fintan’s girls who were the deserving winners on a score line of 8-13 to 0-5.

ALL BLACKS AFC

Registrati­on night for the women’s and schoolgirl­s league is on Wednesday, September 12, in the IFA centre in Enniscorth­y from 7.30 p.m. to 9 p.m. Any ladies or girls over 16 interested in playing with the All Blacks AFC women’s team this season please get in touch. New players ALWAYS welcome.We need help from parents to assist/manage with the following age groups: U – nine girls, under-six/7 Boys, U – 8/9 Boys and under-11 boys

The club will offer all possible support and training. These are rewarding roles and ideally suited to parents with children playing in these age groups. All help greatly appreciate­d and new volunteers will be extremely welcome. No special skills needed bar patience and a good positive attitude towards all the kids. If you can assist we would love to hear from you or please share with anyone you think may be in a position to assist.

MAYGLASS SCHOOL

The Mayglass National school parents’ associatio­n will hold itsannual general meeting in the school on September 20 at 8 p.m. All parents are welcome.

BANNOW-BALLYMITTY CYCLE FOR HOMELESS

CARRIG-ON-BANNOW ICA.

Our first meeting after the summer break took place on Monday the eighth, where we welcomed two new members to our guild. Our next meeting will be held in carrig-on-bannow community centre on Monday, October 8, at 7.30 p.m. Competitio­n on the night will ‘the biggest cooking apple’. New members always welcome.

The Study Centre in Wellington­bridge started back on Monday, September 3. Running Monday to Friday 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturday 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

COMMUNITY GAMES

Bannow-Ballymitty Community Games has had a break for a few years, but its time to get back in action again. Everything from athletics, team sports, music, song and dance, draughts, chess and more for young people aged 6-16. Watch this space for date of meeting to be held in September to see interest going forward and to encourage new faces and ideas on board committee.

GAA CLUB NOTES

Our under-17 Men’s Football team travelled up to Buffers Alley on Sunday last and took a win which see s them slip into the semi-final spot. Their opponents will be Kilross Gaels and in the Hurling semi-final they take on Buffers Alley. Best of luck to all involved.

The under-13 boys were up against a very strong Ballinastr­aw Gaels in St Patrick’s Park on Saturday last. Our Boys battled hard throughout the game well done to the Squad and their mentors. Final score B/B 1-03 B/ G3-12. Our under-12 camogie girls clocked up the miles this week. First stop was up to Duffry Rovers while in the second game they went down to Kilmore. Well done to all involved.

The Intermedia­te Footballer­s took another loss when Horeswood took the points in the last round of the championsh­ip on Friday last in a dark misty evening up in Gusserane. Check our Facebook page and Twitter account for all matches during the week.

Piercestow­n GOLF CLASSIC

Rory O’Connor is organising a four ball golf classic in St Helen’s Bay Golf Resort on Friday, September 21, in aid of the Niall Mellon township trust. On November 17, Rory will set off to Cape town in South Africa to lend a helping hand to build better infrastruc­ture in poor African communitie­s.

To date, the charity has built 16 new schools and renovated many more, providing over 10,000 children with a better chance at life. To enter a team is €200 with meal and prises included. COMMUNITY CENTRE FUNDRAISER

Piercestow­n Knockingal­l Community Centre (anchor tenants Piercestow­n Scout and Guide Groups) have lost six renters since 2017 which has resulted in loss of income annually.

Following recent Board Meetings the board are organising a’70’s Theme Tea Party (based on old American Tea Party style) with 70’s music and 70’s dress optional in the hall on Friday, September 28, from 8 p.m. till late.

Tables of 10 will be hosted by organisati­ons and other individual­s within our parish, two people will host a table and provide the ‘party faire’ for the night for their table. They will sell 10 tickets for their table.

Parents, grandparen­ts and all family members of all groups using the hall are asked to please support this major fundraisin­g event to ensure sufficient funds available for coming year. Tickets will be on sale shortly. a great night of fun and craic promised. There will be a raffle on the night.
