St. Joseph’s honours handballers who struck gold at world finals
FOUR HANDBALLERS from St Joseph’s Handball Club were honoured by the club when they returned home from the World Championships competition in the USA.
Josh Kavanagh, who is a student in Selskar College, brought home three gold medals from the games.
He won the 15 and under 40x20 singles and double competition. He also won the 15 and under one-wall doubles competition.
He was paired with Taghmon’s Mark Doyle for both of his doubles events.
Adam Walsh (19) from Liam Mellows, took gold in the Men’s C Singles 40x20 competition. A student of construction engineering in Cork, Adam played six games to win the competition which had the biggest field numerically out of the various categories. He was one of the youngest players in the category.
Cora Doyle, from Killeens, is a student at the Presentation Secondary School and she also competed at the event, playing in the Ladies B Singles and the 19 and under doubles with Armagh handballer Megan McCann. The girls reached the semi final of that competition but unfortunately lost out.
Finally, club chairman Gavin Buggy won the Masters Singles, and the Over 35s doubles with Dominic Lynch from Kerry.
He remarked: ‘The club brought home a nice haul of medals. We’re a very active club, playing on two courts at St Joseph’s Community Centre. Handball, traditionally, would be very strong in the town.’
The group enjoyed a nice evening of refreshments and celebration at the centre with various members of the club.
They were, Gavin said, always looking for new members. Juvenile training takes place on Monday evenings from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. (first hour caters for beginners) and on Thursday evenings from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m.
