All of Wexford was a stage for Culture Night

- By MARIA PEPPER

EVERYWHERE you looked in Wexford last Friday night, there was a free performance taking place to celebrate national Culture Night, from aerial acrobatics in Selskar Square and colourful yarn-bombing at historic Selsksar Abbey to comedy in Cornmarket, drama in the library, choirs and orchestras in St. Iberius and Rowe Street churches and an ‘Alice in Wonderland’ contemporary dance in the National Opera House.

Members of the public were spoilt for choice as they made their way from venue to venue, with no admission tickets needed, enjoying dozens of brief shows staged by music, dancing and performing arts groups including Wexford Light Opera Society, Riff Raff Theatre, Comhaltas Ceoltóiri Eireann, Wexford Sinfonia, Sarah Sullivan Academy of Irish Dancing, Sheila Grace Dance Company, Oyster Lane Theatre, Discovering Drama, Wexford Drama Group, the Creative Hub, Tara McGinn, Red Moon Creative Arts, Loch Garman Band, Saxology, Deirdre Grant, Wexford Studio Theatre and traditional Irish harp player Mollie Carroll. Choirs were out in force -the Male Voice Choir sang popular pieces from their vast repertoire in St. Iberius Church; Quay Notes community choir performed songs from all over the world in the National Opera House; the female acapella group Credo sang a variety of secular and church music in Rowe Street Church; Stage Frights presented sang acapella with harmony and vocal percussion in St. Iberius Church; the acapella chamber choir Valda performed in Selskar Abbey while Wexford Ladies Choir presented songs from popular music in St. Iberius Church. The Wexford events were part of a packed programme of culture throught County Wexford and many thousands of free performances around Ireland on September 21.
