SENIOR ATHLETICS

A small but strong contingent of St Killian’s athletes travelled to Kilmore recently to complete in the ever popular annual Kilmore Athletics Club 10k. The conditions were a bit blustery but this did not deter Freddy Stituk Keron, who went through the first mile bang on five minutes. Niall Sheil was hot on his the tail with the pair going through 3k in 9min15. Freddy moved up a gear coming into the seventh kilometer and was to maintain this gap to finish in a time of 32min 30sec with Niall coming in second place in 32min 39sec. Brian O’Shaughnessy had a super run to finish in 11th place in a time of 36min 39sec with Gail Kavanagh really going from strength to strength in breaking the magic 1hour to finish in a time of 57min 39sec.

Brian was our sole representative last week in the SBR Athletic Club’s annual 4mile race. The race was won by Freddy with Brian finishing in 19 place in a time of 23min 17sec in a very competitive field.

There was good support for the Oylegate Half Marathon and 10k. The half marathon was won by Freddy and we had great performances from Chris McCarthy who broke the 90 min barrier to finish in 22nd place in a time of 89min 17sec. Gerry Moran dug deep to finish in 98th place in a time of 2hours 7min. In the 10k Niall took the win in 34min 9sec with Brian finishing in fourth place in 37min 15sec and Gail finishing in 64th place in 60min 13sec. It is great to see Freddy running the road of Wexford. Freddy hails from the running Mecca of Iten in Kenya where he rubs shoulders with the running Gods, the likes of Eliud Kipchoge, Mo Farah and the New Zealand Robertson twins to name just a few. Freddy is gearing up for the Dublin marathon where he holds a PB of 2hours 14 minutes.

JUVENILE ATHLETICS

Four juveniles from St Killian’s travelled to the open Cross Country events in Taghmon on Sunday week last for the first of the season’s activities. First up was Kyra Jarvis, who finished in second place in the under-eight competition. This was Kyra’s first ever competition and what a way to start.

Her brother Ethan was then up in the under-nine competition and he ran a great race but got pipped on the hill coming in to the finish line and he finished in fifth place. Chloe Reck and Emma McCarthy went head to head in the 1000m under-12 race, with Emma coming home in an impressive second place and Chloe getting caught on the hill but finishing strongly. This was great preparation for the upcoming championships. Well done, all.
