Adamstown CARDS

The weekly ‘30’ card game continues in the community centre this Friday, October 5, at 9 p.m. Thanks to the ladies for the tea last week. Catering on Friday the fifth will be: Breda Whelan, Deirdre Whelan and Bessie Fortune. On Friday the 12th will be: Rosie Siggins, Maria Murphy and Maura Barden. Proceeds going to parish funds.

ACTIVE RETIREMENT

Adamstown Active Retirement are having a meal in the Horse and Hound on Thursday, October 4, at 1.30 p.m. All are welcome to come along. Anyone interested in going to the meal, please ring Betty O’Shea at 053 9240777 or Callie Doyle at 053 9240972.

HOSPICE COFFEE DAY

Denis and Breda Banville will host a coffee day in aid of hospice on Saturday, October 6, from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. at their home in Camross and will be assisted by members of the Camross ICA Every cup counts, come along and support your local hospice and make a life a little brighter.

SYMPANTHY

Our condolence­s to Bridget O’Rourke and family Lambstown, Killurin on the death of her husband Pat, who died on Monday, September 24.

For many years Pat was chairman of Coláiste Abbain parents’ associatio­n. Pat’s daughter Noeleen was also associated with Adamstown as she printed the Adamstown Newsletter for a number of years. Pat was predecease­d by his son Dan and daugher Siobhán and we extend our sympathy to his children Bernadette, John, Noeleen, Liam, Grace and Erin, to his many friends and extended family.

Pat’s funeral Mass was celebrated on Wednesday, September 26, in St Laurence’s Church, Glynn with burial afterwards in Whitechurc­h Cemetery. May he rest in peace.

U13 FOOTBALL SUCCESS

Congratula­tions to the Adamstown boys’ under-13 football team in winning the New Ross Standard under-13 football division four shield in Gusserane. They put in a powerful second half performanc­e to secure a victory over Clongeen with scores from Donny McDonald, Daniel O’Gorman, Charlie Purcell and Jake Cadogan but the star of the match was Philip Kearns scoring 1-7 including a late goal.

CASTLE VINTAGE CLUB

The Dick Williams Memorial tractor run is being held on Sunday, October 7, leaving Taghmon Community Centre at 11 a.m. There will be spot prizes on the day.

Bree-Galbally BREE AC

Outdoor Training will resume on Mondays and Wednesdays from October 1 in the lower GAA field from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. for all athletes over eight years of age. The Co Cross Country Part one, for Bree AC registered members only, will take place in Adamstown on Sunday next, October 7, at midday. Part two will be in JFK Park on Sunday, October 14, at midday. Indoor training will resume on Thursday evenings at a later date.

BINGO IN BREE

Bree Youth Club will be holding a bingo every second Tuesday in Garry Byrnes at 9 p.m. starting this Tuesday, October 2.

GALBALLY MASS TIME

The time of Saturday Evening Vigil Mass in Galbally has been changed to 6 p.m.

BEST OF BREE FESTIVAL

Many thanks to all who sponsored, attended and/or assisted with the ‘Best of Bree’ Festival, which was recently hosted by Bree Community Developmen­t Group.

Highlight of the weekend was the ‘Dancers and Chancers’ Competitio­n, which took place in Bree Community Centre on the Saturday night. Nine local groups performed representi­ng the ICA, Youth Club, Ballyhogue NS with Bree United, Bri Beag, Ladies’ Football, GAA, Community Games, Macra and Wexford Academy. The latter five clubs qualified for the Grand Final.

The Wexford Academy troupe of Jack Fortune, Jim Slevin, Mick Hughes, Chris Daly and Anna Walsh with dancers Amy Long and Erin Fortune were declared winners. Runners-up were the Ballyhogue GAA group of Shane Dawson, Liam Curtis, Cathal Byrne, James Parle, Graham Parker and Cian Rogers coached by Chloe Dagg and Amelia McComisky. Third place was Bree Macra Group of Peter Doyle, Eleanor Bolger and Conor Byrne with dancers Cait Doyle and Kasey Doyle. Competitio­n Sponsors were Garry Byrne and Hughes and Hughes Civil Engineerin­g.

A special thanks from the organising committee to all groups but especially to the Bri Beag group who donated all of their sponsorshi­p money to Bree Community Playground Project.

Throughout the weekend free entertainm­ent was provided either in the hall or on the Bandstand by Colleen Coughlan, Jimmy Hogan and Lar Kelly, Joseph Hogan, John Hogan, Peter Hughes and friends, Tony Durack and friends and Stephen Murphy.

The Jar of 181 sweets was won by Carmel Kehoe. Hamper winners were Issy Grannell, Breda Cahill, Theresa Dixon, Kitty Breen, Clare Doyle and Mark Smith. The Senior Fittest Families due to be held over the weekend, was postponed to a later date.

‘BEST OF BREE’ FESTIVAL FOR KIDS – ‘Junior Adventure Run’ was a very popular event with twenty four teams taking part. Winners were Aoife Fortune, Pauraic Doyle, Joe Doyle and sub Jack Fortune. Runners-up were Ciara Byrne, Amy Doyle, Ella Doyle and sub Chloe Doyle. Third place were Casey Cullen, Noah Goucher, Emily Goucher and sub Holly Dunne Maher and in fourth place were Katie, Nathan and Fergal Doyle.

There were 207 entries in the children’s Art Competitio­n. Winners were Rubi Grocock, Peter Doyle, Seán Doyle and Rian Murphy (Infants), Meave Henneby, Sarah Jewison, Caoimhe Canavan Thorpe and Ella Murphy Furlong (first to third class) and Katie Tyrell, Cormac Murphy, Casey Sinnott and Harry Helps (fourth-6th Class). Adjudicato­r Award winners were Sacha McCauley, Eva Power and Sam Devereux. Scarecrow Prize winners were Hughes Family, Daly Family, Conor Galavan, Riona and Muireann Kehoe.

The Fancy Dress competitio­n attracted a lot of attention. Winners of Best Dressed was Sam Devereux as ‘Diary of a Wimpy Kid’, Most Creative was Ella Carberry as a Unicorn and the Adjudicato­rs Award went to Aodhan and Fionnuir O’Dowd as ‘Where’s Wally’.

A big thank you to all children and their schools for their involvemen­t.

CHARITY HUNT CANTER

The Killinick Harriers are having a charity fun ride starting at 9.30 a.m. in Ballycogle­y on October 7. Last horses out at 1 p.m., all jumps will be optional, proceeds to ASK and Mayglass National School.

Glynn-Barntown HOSPICE COFFEE MORNING

The recent Hospice Homecare coffee morning in O’Brien’s Londis, raised a massive €350. Thank you so much to everyone who supported us on the day.

GAA TRAD NIGHT

Our next Trad Night will be held in the clubhouse on Saturday, October 6, from 9 p.m. This is a really enjoyable evening where we celebrate our culture. Admission free. Refreshmen­ts compliment­ary.

BARNTOWN HERITAGE GROUP

Barntown Heritage Group have recently formed as a group which consists of a number of local volunteers. We are all about promoting and developing awareness of the huge depth of history within Barntown from famous events, historical structures and local people.

To achieve this we hope to work on a number of projects each year. At the moment we are working on resurrecti­ng the Three Rocks Trail. This trail takes you through a historical journey of the famous three Rocks 1798 battle which was a huge part of the 1798 rebellion.

BARNTOWN COMMUNITY CENTRE

Following some redecorati­on, Barntown Community Centre is now open for bookings. Any group or individual wishing to book the hall or a meeting room can contact any of our committee members or Jimmy Dempsey at 086 3858429 who will be able to advise on available times.

SOCIAL DANCING

Learn to jive, waltz, Quickstep and many more. Social dancing classes have resumed in Glynn Hall on Monday, September 17, at 8 p.m. Beginners and advanced – all welcome.

Also classes commenced on Tuesday, September 18, and will take place every Tuesday evening in the Horse and Hound Inn, Ballinbool­a at 8 p.m.

COMMUNITY GAMES

Glynn-Barntown Community Games are hosting a Fundraisin­g table quiz to raise much needs funds to ensure the future and developmen­t of Community Games in Glynn-Barntown. The table quiz will be held in Declan’s, The Sycamore House on Friday, October 19, at 9 p.m. The support of the community would be greatly appreciate­d (with both spot prizes and on the with night with teams of 4).

The Little Sea Musical Society are welcoming new members. Join us as we prepare for our Christmas Concert ‘Disney Magic and Christmas Classics’. FAMILY RESOURCE CENTRE

Parent, baby and Toddler Morning – This will take place on Tuesday, October 9, at 10 a.m. There will be toys and activities for the children and refreshmen­ts for all. The Public Health Nurse will be there to chat to parents. Supervised Study Group – Open to all secondary students for homework and study, supervised and quiet. Dusty the Dragon – Thanks to all who attended the unveiling of Dusty the Dragon in Taghmon NS last week. Special thanks to Mr Ormonde, staff and pupils of Taghmon NS for their support with the project and to all volunteers who helped out on the day. The Men’s Shed group are delighted that Dusty will be well looked after in his new home.
