Shock and grief at untimely death of young mum

THERE was a palpable feeling of sadness in Gorey last Wednesday when news broke of the sudden passing of a young mother.

Laura Lawless (31) of Toberagal, Boolavogue was found unconsciou­s in a bookmakers in Gorey town.

A spokespers­on from Gorey Garda Station said they received a call around 1.15 p.m. to say a woman had collapsed in the premises.

‘When we arrived she was in an unresponsi­ve state and we called emergency services,’ said the spokespers­on. ‘They performed CPR on her and unfortunat­ely she was pronounced dead at the scene.’

The death is being treated as a personal tragedy and Gardaí from Gorey Garda Station are preparing a file for the coroner for an inquest into the woman’s death which will be held at a later date.

Since the shocking news, more than 40 tributes have poured in for Laura via social media. Many have described her as an ‘incredible girl’ who often made people ‘cry with laughter’. One person said Laura was a ‘funny, clever, kind and generous person’ and was always amazed at her generosity.

It is believed Laura was living in Enniscorth­y up until the time of her passing and began a course last month. She is a former student of Gorey Community School and Selskar College in Wexford. She also studied in Gorey Further Education and Training Centre over two years ago.

Laura’s parents, Louise and Alec, are proprietor­s of Lawless’s Shop and Post Office in Boolavogue. Natives of Ballygarre­tt, they bought the business in 1996 and have turned it into the hub of the village that it is today, expanding and improving it bit by bit.

Hundreds of mourners turned out for Laura’s funeral Mass that took place on Sunday, in St Cormac’s Church, Boolavogue, followed by burial in Ballygarre­tt Cemetery.

She will be sadly missed by her parents Louise and Alec, son Oisin, siblings Alec, Richard, James and Mary, sister-inlaw Jacque, granny, uncles, cousins, her friend Gary, nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
