Next Saturday and Sunday we will have the gents’ autumn hamper competition, a chance for some gent to earn some ‘domestic credit’ by taking this lovely prize home.

Liam Bowler has had another of his brainwaves, and he has organised a challenge match between a team of left-handed players and a team of right-handed players. There are 20 players on each team and these matches (over nine holes) will take place on Saturday, October 13.

This is a charity fundraiser for the 3Ts (Turn the Tide on Suicide), and members can enter a sweepstake at €5 a time forecasting the winning team.

This is a two-horse race so there will be plenty of winning team predictions.

The sweeps winner will be decided by the winning team score and then by the number of matches won, and finally by the individual winners. The prizes are being sponsored by ‘Ping’, and all funds raised will be donated to the 3Ts.

This will be an annual event and the lefties will have Nicky Murphy as Captain (Solheim Cup team), while the right-handers will have Jackie Lynn as their Captain (Ryder Cup team) for this year’s match. Entry sheets are available in the Pro Shop.

The 3Ts (Turn the Tide of Suicide) is a registered charity in Ireland, founded in 2003 to raise awareness of the issue of suicide. This is the 16th year of the popular 3Ts golf tournament and we wish our Wexford team the best of luck in the final.

Our last counting competition of the season was an 18-hole singles stableford sponsored by Fehily’s Chemist, Main Street, Wexford, which took place on Saturday, September 29, and Thursday, October 4. It was another high-scoring competition.

TAGHMON SOCIETY

Our humble little society upped the standard for the long-awaited return after several years of the weekend away when we went to the course Seve designed at The Heritage Golf Resort near Portarlington in Laois.

Such opulence and grandeur we had never seen the likes of. Everything was five star for the duration. From a total of 35 players, 28 stayed overnight, and some even saw the sun rising!

Results: 1, Jim McGee (11), 43; 2, Nicky Cousins (15), 40; 3, Colm Murphy (23), 36 (back nine); Cat. 1, Edward Cousins (4), 36; Cat. 2, Ian Daniels (20), 36; Cat. 3, Larry Curtin (28), 34 (back nine); front nine, Eddie Cousins (24), 20; back nine, Jason White (15), 19; nearest the pin, Philip Wadding (seventh), 4 ½”, and Edward Cousins (15th); twos club, Philip Wadding who won €50. Well done to all winners.

As an additional bonus, The Heritage are running a competition for all society winners during this year to return in November and play for a fantastic prize of a trip to Spain for 20 of their society members.

No pressure Jim, just remember who your friends are! The look on his face when that was announced had to be seen to be believed.

Captain Rory Murphy spoke after the sumptuous dinner, stating that it is an honour to be at the helm of such a strong society and to be able to visit a course with such fabulous facilities.

Jim McGee then followed him and stated that this is a great course and that he had a slight advantage over the rest of us in that he had played here several times before. He also said that he was delighted to have his first win in the society after many years of trying.

Well, I have news for you Jim, as old age must be creeping in as this is your third win.

The previous ones being in Faithlegg on October 18, 2008, and again on June 16, 2012, in Druids Glen versus Kilmacud Crokes Golf Society.

After a few pints and an early night for all, it was an eat all you can eat breakfast, a few photos with Seve, and then back to The Courtyard in Ferns for more liquid, dinner and watching the Ryder Cup. Finally, back to the Taghmon homebase of Alice Brady’s to round off the weekend, a fantastic one all in all.

Nash’s bus service looked after our transport needs there and back and all those on board, bar one, got great amusement from the new revolutionary feature on the bus...a shower, albeit with cold water only and you had to supply your own soap, but just right for clearing the head after a heavy night. Isn’t that right Tiger?

Class jokes were read out on the bus on the way up that at best were described as fine, the new buzzword for the weekend along with the ‘go to’ club.

The lost property office had to be opened for a sentimental loss of some significance to one player; yes, our Loughy lost his favourite tee that he has had for some two years.

After the time limit of five minutes, searching had to be abandoned and we moved on.

One player got so caught up in the occasion and the excitement that he forgot to use his newly-acquired hip flask.

The next outing is in Woodenbridge G.C. on October 14, starting at 9 a.m. As usual, let a committee member know whether you are available or not and making use of the bus.
