Council set to launch student enterprise site

-

WEXFORD County Council will be launching a new website in the coming months to assist teachers and pupils involved in the Student Enterprise Programme.

Last year 1,442 students from all over the county participated in the programme - representing 20 second level schools. The programme is coordinated by Emer Doyle.

The National Student Enterprise Committee has updated resources to ensure everything is compliant with GDPR requirements and new policies have been put in place to ensure compliance.

Through the programme participants set up and run their own student business to give them an insight into what it’s like to be an entrepreneur in addition to hands-on experience of what it’s like to run a business.

The country’s biggest student enterprise competition participants do everything that real life entrepreneurs do when setting up a business.

They have to come up with an idea and a name, develop a brand and ultimately supply a product of service.

The students involved get to attend workshops as well as receiving in-school talks from business mentors in addition to taking part in site visits to local companies and enterprises.

The programme is open to all second level students and there are some brilliant prizes up for grabs too including a €2,000 technology voucher for the winning team as well as €1,000 for their school.

Some of the past entrants have gone on to experience a lot of success with their ideas.

In 2016 a student from County Wicklow developed a silicone band device to keep headphones tangle-free when out walking or jogging.

The simple idea proved to be very popular and he is now selling his product online through his website for €7 each and is shipping them to America, the UK and Europe, while also still concentrating on his studies!

It’s expected that the county final of the programme will take place in the National Opera House on March 27 next year.

The national final date has already been announced with the event scheduled to take place in Croke Park on Friday, May 3.
